Newly desexed bunny craziness!

Hi everyone! I’m new here but I’ve already got some great advice from the forum.

I just had my 6 month old dwarf lop bunny, Rufus, neutered on Monday. Everything seems to have gone really well (apart from me being a giant bundle of nerves the whole day) and he’s been eating normally. He was a little dozy that evening when I bought him home but now he’s gone completely crazy! Every hormonal behaviour he had before has been multiplied by ten! When he’s out in the house he’s racing around like a nutcase, jumping on and off things twice as high as he would ever jump before and chewing anything he can get his teeth into. When he’s in his hutch he’s tearing wood off the walls sometimes and trying to chew through the metal bars at others. Yesterday I found him humping his stuffed bunny so hard I thought he was going to pass out. I would have thought that area would be a little tender! Normally he loves to be cuddled and carried around but now he’s always trying to jump over my shoulder and biting my clothing.

I’ve read a bit about him getting a hormone surge after neutering but how long should I expect it to last? I’m so worried he’s going to injure himself or something while I’m at work!

Hormonal behaviors can linger/be wonky for 4-6 weeks after a neuter.

I’m not sure about him hurting himself while humping his stuffed bunny. None of my boys have ever gone for the surrogate bunny so it’s never something I’ve thought about.

He will likely be psychotic for a few weeks. Hang in there, things when get better once his hormones settle.

Thank you! I will just have to wait it out. He was a little more settled last night, I had some people over to cuddle him and he liked that.

Bromley just got his staples out today and he was neutered on July 18th. He is FINALLY starting to calm down a bit, but he can still be crazy. I got home at 11 last night after my volunteer shift and had to clean his cage before going to bed because he decided to dump his water dish EVERYWHERE! His cage was sopping and I had to throw out his blanket completely. And what is he doing as I’m trying to lay down more paper? Ripping it up as fast as I can lay it down and throwing his cat toys around to get into my way. >.< And because he is a bad incision chewing bunny and had 4 vet trips in 2 weeks, he has been growling at me whenever I try to go into his cage. He finally stoped doing this about 2 days ago, but I am fully expecting him to do it with renewed vigor when I get home tonight because of his trip to the vet this morning.

Haha! That sounds so familiar. I got home after work last night and he had turned his litter tray over and then rolled in it. Charming little guy. I freaked out that he’d get his stitches infected but there’s no redness or anything. They’re getting so much harder to see though because all his fur seems to have grown back really quickly! His ear is still half shaved and pitiful looking though from the drip. He’s always been free range at night but I’m getting him a pen to run around in until he stops being so destructive!
