Last weekend I went shopping with my parents as I was bored. We went into the pet store to get dog bones and while my dad was paying, my mum and i were just walking around and came across two New zealand lops (thats what it said on the cage) They were both in seperate cages but had 3 – 4 guinea pigs with them. And they were huge. They were much bigger than Pancakes

So i guess what im asking is, how big do they get???? Not that I want to buy one but they were in a tiny cage with guinea pigs had enough room to lay down. They were $70 each. I guess I want to know if they were full size or babys.

Maybe they had New Zealands and also some lops in there but the lops had been sold? Or else they were NZ + lop mixes? I’ve never heard of NZ lops… Anyway, the New Zealand breed rabbits get quite big – up to 5 1/2 kg.  They’re an up ear breed – the NZ whites have red eyes but you can get NZ reds and NZ blacks and possible “broken’ colourings. i.e. white with black splotches.

Yes sounds like they were mixed breeds.  The NZW  get about 10 lbs. Pretty docile.

New Zealand’s don’t come in lop styles. My New Zealand, Maxine is 13 pounds – she is a red eyed white. They are one of the best rabbit breeds in my opinion. I also had a male one that was adopted to a great home named Gideon. He was a lover too, a big lover.

So sad they were caged in that small cage with the guinea pigs, poor bunnies.

I want a NZ someday. They’re on “my list”… lol! Very big bunnies, and in many cases, very sweet and calm.

I love New Zealand rabbits. Definetly one of my fave breeds. How sad that they are very commonly used for evil purposes (animal testing and meat). Makes me so angry.

pinky poo is a NZ not a lop tho. she was under 10lbs at her last vet visit… i believe she’s about 8.5 lbs. she’s quite a cuddle bun! the most cuddly of all my buns so far (i’ve had a holland lop and 2 mini lops). she has a feisty attitude and is far more curious/adventurous than my lops were but she startles more easily. i think its because she can hear better with those big standy-uppy ears of hers i’m def a big fan of the breed!

The rabbit coordinator at Red Door has a lovely lump of NZ luv named Drake.  Here is a pic of him with another Red Door Volunteer at the Gimme Shelter walk 2 weeks ago.

Drake was Mr. Popular at the event because he’ll let anyone pick him up and hold him, and will even fall asleep on people!  Quite the change from the malnourished urine-scalded filthy critter that cam into the shelter – even the vet didn’t think he was going to make it.  But there he was, being toted around by kids and demolishing all the clover in his pen.

Oh, he’s gorgeous! Do you know what his story was before he came to the shelter?

Well, his name is Drake because he was found wandering on Drake Street.  He was emaciated, filthy, and had horrible urine scald on his butt and both back legs – all the fur was gone.  He was so skinny the vet honestly thought he wasn’t going to make it – he was down to half of his recommended weight for his size.  But he rallied and made a great recovery and Toni took him home.  He really is the sweetest rabbit – he’s a huge lap-bun and will let anyone tote him around as long as there are pettins.  He spent most of the day of the event napping on complete strangers while his spotty dwarf bondmate April disapproved of the whole thing.

Aww, he is so cute. I think I want one. I think a NZ Lop would be so adorable. I have always been a fan of lops. I know this girl at work who had a bunch of NZ Reds and one of them got out and started mixing with the wild rabbits around her house. They are a bit larger and a little redder. I haven’t seen any though. The rest of them she a-

…well it’s quite sad what happened to the others.

I love the uppy ears on NZ, they are very thick and long… an all white lop is very pretty too, but I prefer uppy-eared buns personally. Also, most of the pics I’ve seen of NZ… they have longer eyelashes than other buns do. I think that makes them look precious too!
