Need advise on a cage. Getting a holland lop next month and I’m looking for a new cage. Does anyone have this cage? It by WARE. I’m not sure if it has a wire bottom. I like the look of it because it seems to have solid sides to prevent potty accidents and it has a pull out tray. Any other suggestions are welcome too! TIA

When looking for a cage I would nearly always reccomend making your own. You can do this from storage cubes or even buy an x-pen

          Something like this:
          http://www.therabbithouse.com/indoor/rabbit-cages-cubes.asp

To me it looks like the cage you showed looks way too small and in most cases that’s the case for rabbit marketed cages…

As for the pull out tray I don’t see how you could put any padding for poor bunny down without blocking whatever’s there and I doubt it would be good for the bunnies feet without it…

Again I’d reccomend an x pen or building your own nic cage since then you’ll have space to provide a littler box and hay rack and other toys. Also there’s no real room for the poor baby to jump around in there.

Binkers, I completely agree with BunMum – that cage looks far too inappropriate for a happy bunny, not homely atall – check out all our set ups and NIC cages houses and you may get an idea to make your own. Is it for all day use or just to be put back in at night to sleep?

Lovely pic on your Avatar btw.

Yes, I’m afraid that cage is terribly small and unsuitable for any sized rabbit. Unfortunately marketing of many rabbit products is often insufficient to their needs.

Check out this guideline for cage size: http://www.therabbithouse.com/guide_size.asp
And this page for brand recommendations, appropriate sized cages are listed first, then there is a section of cages that don’t meet the space requirements below that: http://www.therabbithouse.com/indoor/rabbitcages.asp

Also check out this page for a variety of housing options: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/GreatHabitats/tabid/229/Default.aspx

Thanks everyone. I’ve never built my own cage. I need it to be able to move around so building one that’s mobile seems awfully challenging. I usually attach a play area for my bunny to run around in but that also allows them to go back in their cage for the potty and resting if they want.

Thank you Vienna- that’s is my bunny Toby who recently passed. ?

Hey Binkers, you know if you’ve got a big x-pen area you don’t really need a cage…. a litter tray and play area with a hay rack, food and drink bowl, maybe blankie (if bun doesn’t wee on it) and that’s fine…. most people on here have their bunnies freeroam without a cage…. so if you don’t have any dangers around (cats or dogs in the room) then a big x-pen could be fine…. (and more mobile…)

Very true Vienna. When I was single and had no kids all my other buns had free reign but now I have 3 kids so allowing my bun free reign makes me a little nervous.

Easy solution!! Kids IN x-pen (I’m not against small cages for children!!) – Bun OUT & free ! LOL
