I have recently become an owner of a baby rabbit completely unprepared because I just found my dog destroying a nest and saved the last one still alive and I want to keep it that way. so I created an enclosure for him out of a large cardboard box and gave him plenty of water and veggies. but now after about 2 days, he is barely responsive not pooping not eating, and seems like he is sleeping all day. I’m not sure what I should do about this and how to make him better. I’ve tried giving him entertainment items and completely cleaning out his litterbox. what could be causing this? and how can I make him better?

(again sorry if I’m posting in the wrong place I can move it if you let me know I’m new to this)

Unfortunately the subject of intentional breeding on Binkybunny is prohibited, therefore, many active members (including myself) are not very knowledgeable on baby rabbit care, especially wild rabbits whose needs can differ from domestic rabbits.

I recommend contacting a local wildlife rescue in your area to get information on nursing the baby at home or arrangements to send to a rehabilitation center. Please note that depending where you live, housing wild rabbits may be illegal. Again, a local wildlife agency will be able to give you the proper information.

There is a likelihood based on what you’ve described that this baby may not make it, which is unfortunate, but not your fault.

In the above link you’ll find some good info.

You can feed the bun kitten replacement milk mixed with double cream. One or two feedings per 24 hours is enough. You should try and stimulate the poop function by gently rubbing the belly with your fingertips after feeding.

Also make sure the bun is kept warm. Mama bun typically does not lay with the kits, so the kit needs warm and fluffy bedding.

I have helped hand raise my fair share of wild baby buns. I strongly suggest seeking out a wildlife rehabber. They will either take the baby and raise it or show you how to do so if you want to do it yourself (if it is legal in your area). Wild baby rabbits rarely survive in captivity. It is no one’s fault they are just not built to be anything but wild and struggle to thrive in a captive environment.

just a bit of an update and some sad news. so if your having a bad day don’t read.

I did everything I could and got him to eat a bit last night and even had an animal shelter in line to pick him up this afternoon but despite my best efforts when I went to check on him this morning he’s was stiff in his little cardboard castle we are going to give him a proper burial with his siblings in a spot my dog can’t get to the right next to an old pet chicken of mine he looked like he just drifted off in his sleep and he looked comfortable so I hope he enjoyed the last few days in a comphy large space with all the food and fun I could give him. rip

Oh no! I’m so sorry. That’s so great that he could at least have a few days with food, comfort, and fun.

                  Binky free little guy! <3

I’m sorry you lost him. You did what you could do, and he was as safe and comfy as could be. As Sonn said in her post, it’s very, very difficult to save an orphaned wild baby bun.

It was lovely of you to try and help him.

                    Binky free, little baby.

Binky free furbaby ♥ I’m so sorry – this is a very common thing to happen and you did the best you could ever do.
