        Hi all,

We got Dandelion less than a week ago and he is still adjusting to his new surroundings. He isn’t really open to petting yet and mostly stays in his hiding box. I’ve heard/read that rabbits should be brushed once a week though. Will it set back our efforts to help him adjust if we try to brush him and it stresses him out? Should we/can we hold off until he is less afraid of us? He is a relatively short-haired agouti-dutch mix.

If he is not currently going through a molt, I don’t think waiting a few days without brushing would be too bad. If you do see is fur comes off very easily though, it would be important to try so he doesn’t ingest it all. That can cause some major GI issues.

I am not experienced with short-haired agouti-dutch mix fur, so unsure how that may affect things. I have an American Sable (short hair?) and Netherland Dwarf (medium length), and typically I only need to worry about the ND, who releases a lot of fur during a molt. It gets everywhere and he’s too small to handle it, so even if it’s stressful, he gets groomed daily during those times.
