am thinking of getting this Parrot cage and converting it into a rabbit hutch.

It has a middle divider that can be pulled out to make one cage.

Just wanting some advice, what do you all think? Parts of the condo I have now keeps coming apart,

This cage is about 8 feel long and about 3 foot wide and about 7 foot tall, the cage is on rollers to make moving it around easier.

I don’t think it’s wide enough. It needs to be at least 4 feet wide at a minimum.

I’ve seen people try to convert this cage before and I never thought the results were adequate.

It looks like a nice sturdy cage otherwise.

i would do xpens. are you starting to bond them into pairs? the NIC condos are great but they can come apart, and i’m sure your furfamily is bustling at the seams. that cage looks like it is too small and would be too hard to clean, and it’s probably more expensive than getting xpens.

yes i dont think its really wide enough, they will only have enough room on each level to stand and although its big there wont be much room to walk about or stretch, you could try building your own from NIC cubes or build your own with wood (its not that hard!)

I have two big NIC cubes that we built, they keep destroying it and it’s starting to colapse in some parts. I liked this one because it looked sturdy, but maybe try something else. It looked quite big, i also leave the doors open and they have free run of a pen as well. I don’t know what else to try.

Try reinforcing the condos you have. Ours is very strong, we used many heavy duty cable ties, testing for strength as we went. We didn’t use any of the round connectors that came w/the cubes, they come apart to easy. The shelves are plywood w/coroplast on top. Held up w/1×1’s. We also built a wood base covered w/coroplast, it even has wheels. It’s so strong we can pull & push it around & have an herb garden on the back of the top. I can post pics if you want. I love NIC cubes, we’ve made x-pens, block off cords, gates, my kids even made a garbage/recycle bin.

                    That parrot cage looks expensive.

I have wheels on mine and strong cable ties, I have 7 rabbits and 6 are babies that love getting into trouble, they have now chewed off a lot of the coating on the grids. Destruction is their middle names.

I have lino tiles stuck to the floor and carpet on the second and third level, which they are now chewing. I have put wooden suport poles everywhere but they also are getting chewed, they also manage to get the clips open and jump on the top of the condos. I have lots of toys and chewing things for them so they are not bored.

The bunnies are also climbing up and down the outside of the condo, they sure a busy little things, they look funny they climb up and when they come back down they climb down with their heads towards the floor.

This picture is of the two condos when I first built them, I have since put the wheels and lino tiles on the bottom, the condo is looking a little used and abused.

The parrot cage is about 8 NIC grids wide and about 3 from front to back of cage and about 6 grids in height. I think I might start pairing them up, maybe they will not be as busy in smaller numbers.

thanks for posting the dimensions! it did not look that big in the pic. so would you put the divider up and have pairs on each side, with levels? it could definitely work, along with time out to play of course. would you buy two of the big cages then?

wow lisa.  and i thought i had a nic grid city at my place… look at all those nic grids!  lol.  i wonder if you could use the parrot cage and expand it with some nic grids to give all the buns enough area?  like have the cage open to a nic fenced area which can be easier to maintain.  you sure do have to accomodate lots-o-buns!

I never close the doors they have their condos but free roam of their pens, on the weekends I sit out the back and they play in the garden, always supervised.

I am starting to think maybe fix up the condos with metal ties and maybe make a third condo. Gizmo seems to be be on top of the condo a lot, I think Tigerlily and him have a love hate relationship, I have seen Gizmo and Zippy quite friendly so thinking of putting them in one condo with their own play area.

I might then put another two together then put Mum and the last two babies together and see how that goes.

My daughter found someone that wanted two of my babies but they were putting them in a hutch on the back veranda, I of course didn’t let them go. I think they might be with me forever, I think what will be will be. They sure are adorable.

WOW that is a grid city! Bunhopolis

You realy have your hands full. I would try putting a strip of cardboard or coroplast part way up the condo to keep them from getting too high & falling, anything so they can’t get a grip.
I can see little spider bunnies climbing all over.

Our Benny was called a ninja by his foster mom. He loves to climb, just the other day he had all four feet hanging on the x-pen. Looking around
like, now what do I do, then mommy thwarted his plans & grabbed him up.

Some buns need more secure clips.

At our shelter we have a bonded pair in a condo (falling apart, not enugh ties) that escaped one night. They managed to get the condo door open, just by pushing.
Normally that wouldn’t be too bad, but someone left the doors to the rabbit room open. Well those two sisters went all over that building, even upstairs leaving
“coco puffs” everywhere. They set off motion alarms & the director had to come down in the middle of the night. She found no brake in just bunny poo everywhere
& two bunnies snuggled together aseep in their condo, with the door open. Well they now have a small carabiner added to the door.

                                    Dog leash clips work too.

Babybunsmum, that sounds like a good idea getting it and keeping the others as well. I have been trying to find coroplast here without any luck; it’s also called a corflute and corrugated plastic sheeting here, I really want to get some of it.

yeah that sign board stuff is great.  my buns do chew at it in some spots but they don’t devour it so it works.   baby will chew at anything in / near her litter & hay box.  including her food tray.  its such hard plastic that she can’t get anything off of it but it has lots of teeth scrape marks anyways
