So, my rabbit has actually only slept on my bed a couple of times. He normally sleeps on the corner closest to the door and faces the door. Last night however, he was in a mad frantic digging frenzy all night. I don’t mind when he digs on the far corner of the bed, last night, however he seemed more focused on digging me out of the bed. All night I was woken up with digging at my arms and head. This is the first time he’s ever paid me any attention while I sleep. Is this normal behavior and I’m just experiencing it for the first time, or is he trying to tell me something that I’m not catching onto?

Unfortunately very normal. My rabbit Pepe loves to dig on my bed. He never ever goes on the bed when it’s made but when I pull the comforter down for bedtime he jumps up and dig, dig, dig. It’s crazy and annoying when you are trying to sleep. I usually grab Pepe and he’ll sleep next to me as long as I hold him down. After awhile though he starts digging again and I shove him off the bed otherwise I would get no sleep instead of just very little.

I had always marveled at bunnies who can sleep in their owner’s bed; I have to ask, don’t they pee in bed too since it is so soft? — digging is what rabbits do instinctively on most surfaces but especially on softer ones. I don’t think it can be stopped permanently, unless you line your bed with wire mesh….

Oh boy, Looks like I’m in for a lot of waking up and tossing in the night. Luckily my bunny rotates his sleeping spots, so I should only be subjected to this maybe once a week…fingers crossed. Thank you for the quick response.

@Petzy. I’m VERY blessed with my bunny. He has several “diggy stations” around the house, some are lined with towels, some blankets and there’s one phone book, no matter where he digs he ALWAYS goes to the litter box to pee. The only time I had an issue with him peeing outside the box, was when I changed his litter to pine pellets and didn’t cover the top with hay. Even then he just peed right next to the litter box on the linoleum. He’s really good and keeping his potty business in the correct space.

You should ask Bumblebee what an exploded ripped up fake downfeather comforter looks like after it’s “had enough digging” done to it in the washing machine. OoOooOo that was a mess!! The bed is a prime diggy fun place! I was tempted to pick up some new sheets on sale the other day but…not yet. Bee’s still ‘teenager-ing’ I actually lay a 2×3 gridd “blanket” over my pillows and the favorite diggy corner and it’s been working well. She also doesn’t get on my bed as much since I now constantly shoo her off it when I am home. Indy used to sleep in my bed with me until Bee taught him how fun it was to play in the pillows and my hair.

Angela, if your bunny shows up tonight wearing teeny tiny headphones, then take the hint. You snore.
