Hi everyone! I have two cute buns named Piper and Penelope. They’re double-maned lionheaded bunnies, and they’re about 6 months old now. I have a cage that is 14 in wide and 36 in long. It’s three levels and I think it is big enough but I’m not sure. I have a few questions for the more experienced bunny owners!

        1) My buns use their litter box but somehow the pee goes all over the back of the cage. Should I get a covered one?

        2) My cage doesn’t have the correct dimensions for a large, covered litter box. I’d like to build one that gives them lots of room, and I can fit a cat litter pan in. How should I build one?

        3) Piper and Penelope have chewed the carpet in my room almost beyond repair. They have toys, blankets, and a bed to dig in but they still want to tear up my new expensive carpeting! I almost contemplated rehoming them because the cost and stress of it was so bad!  Do you have any advice for this?

Thanks for your time and help!

Welcome!!! I built my 2 buns a custom condo. its 2 floors and I built It specifically to fit a nook in our house. they free roam when we are home but I wanted them to have a big place to play while I’m at work. We built it out of wood. it ended up costing about 100 us dollars in the end. We framed with wood and the walls are caging. it was a lot of work but is better than anything we could buy and even if we did find something premade like ours it would cost well over what we paid to build it.

However, lots of people use CC cubes. theyre just wire cubes that you zip tie together in whatever shape you want. Just google bunny condo CC

as for the pee problem- you may not need a covered one. they make litter boxes with high sides. specifically the corner litter boxes have super tall sides and it would be easier to fit in their current cage if it worked.

Be careful with the carpet- the fibers can cause a bunny tummy blockage! that being said- a lot of buns like to “remodel” their human’s homes. Make sure they have lots of bunny safe things to chew on. You can also teach your buns they cannot do that. My boy listens very well with just a “no bun, no do!” but daisy is a little more stubborn. we use a spray bottle with water for her. just be careful not to aim for the ears or eyes. But Obviously if you keep the house super cool you don’t want a damp bun catching a cold!

I’m glad you didn’t decide to rehome them! it can be super stressful in the beginning but most buns will learn over time what they can and cant do. oh and are they both spayed? desexing can sometimes calm the destructive behavior.

oh and ps- DOUBLE MANED lion heads sounds super cute!

Some great advice, C&C condos are certainly a very popular and reasonably customisable option. There’s some pics of mine in this thread here: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/148773/Default.aspx each square grid is 14inches, so based on that I would say your current cage definitely isn’t wide enough. As a minimum for two lionheads, you could probably get away with a condo that was 2 wide, 3 long, 3 tall, with two levels. But 2x4x3 would certainly be preferable. It all depends what kind of room you have available. But always go as big as you can.

Chewing carpet is a big issue with many bunnies, unfortunately some just love to do it. Covering the areas with other toys that can’t be moved, or covering the area they have access to with a different sort of flooring (even just laying down fleece blankets) are some solutions.

It’s already been mentioned, but there are a lot of high back litter boxes. I have one. I think I got it at Petco. Some have the back and sides the same height, with lower fronts, others have a high back, with sloping sides toward the lower front. Here are some at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ahigh%20back%20litter%20box

There is also this small one with a high back, from drsfostersmith.com, that wouldn’t take up as much room as some of the others. It has an attachment to clip it to the cage bars so that it won’t move around, although the reviews suggest that the clip doesn’t last too long
