New mom Marilyn – saved just in time!

This is an appeal from The Rabbit Haven of Scotts Valley, California

Very young bunny mother needs rescue. She must be out by Monday 1-7! Call The Rabbit Haven ASAP at (831)239-7119 or email at director@therabbithaven.org if you can help her.

This sweet and playful, 2 pound young bunny is now on the euthanasia list and we need to get her and her family to safety tomorrow. Marilyn came in to the overfull shelter in the South Bay and surprised everyone by having four tiny babies Friday! This shelter will not keep litters. Marilyn is loving her kits and is very protective. We want to help her and her children survive. The shelter is not a safe place for her. Can anyone out there foster her for a few weeks (minimum 7 weeks to 2.5 months)? The babies need to come back to us at 8 weeks of age. We can provide a pen for you, crocks, litter box, training and set up help. You provide the love and support and get to participate in saving one tiny bunny family from extinction. If you have ever wanted to help a tiny bunny family now is your chance. Call or email us right away please.

My wife, daughters and I have decided to try to raise this little family.  Mark, thank you so much for your offer of help!  Since the bunnies are coming from the Santa Cruz area, the logistics of getting her to Mark would be difficult on such short notice.  We are going to keep them at our home, which is much closer. 

Now, we have to get the people at the shelter to answer the phone and tell us that she is still there….

I don’t know much about her, other than she is quite young (under 6 months), weighs about 2 pounds, and has hotot markings.  She was a stray taken off the street, but that is sometimes code for a dump by an embarassed owner.  I’ll know more tonight when I meet the shelter advocate.

Here are the first pictures.  Not so great, I don’t want to remove mom from the pen tonight.  Three of the four babies (the white ones) are eating well with rounded bellies.  The black one is smaller, I am going to try to help Mom feed him later on.

Osprey and Mark…I was following this at work so intently, I got busted by some of my coworkers. When they heard the situation, they got so upset I had to keep them updated. They wanted me to tell the both of you how wonderful you both are…Mark, for planning a long distance rescue and Osprey for stepping in and saving them. Bless you both.

Not a stupid question at all.  I usually take nice posed pictures, with a backdrop and props.  In this case since the babies are so little and mom was so stressed last night, I only removed her for brief intervals.  I just took a picture through the cage door.

I watched mom feed them this morning, and the little black one was definitely getting some milk.  He/she did not have quite as round of a belly as the others though, so I am going to try to give some assistence later.  Some people on Rabbits Online are breeders and have been giving me suggestions of how to proceed, and Auntie Heather is always available too.  The 3 whites are going to do fine, I just need to make sure that the little one gets her/his share.  I may try putting the black one alone with mom in a basket for a while and see if I can get the baby to feed more.

By the look of the black one’s coloring, he’s gonna have a cute, white collar when he grows up. He does seem a bit runty but it seems yer taking the steps to make sure he gets the best chance there.

Yes Mark, the black does seem to have some Dutch in there, the nose is white, and there is also that white band around the middle that you noticed.  The whites look to have mom’s Hotot eyes.  I hope they have her black ears too.

With supplemental feedings from mom, the little black one has a nice round belly now.  He/She is still much smaller than the rest of the litter, I wonder if this one will end up being a dwarf.  He/She is about half the size of the others.  I cleaned out their place tonight and built a new nest for them.  They have grown quite a bit in just 2 days!

I am curious, can rabbits have one litter with 2 different fathers?

My understanding is it would be the same as a human having fraternal twins of different fathers.  It is feasible (I’ll leave the details to the imagination ), but highly unlikely.  Both fathers would have to be there at essentially the same time, I do not think that rabbit females can store sperm like some other animals (guppies, for example, can have several litters from one contact with a male).

Same here, i try not to read too many of these, because i know i am unable to help (especially from over the sea in a land far far away), i know that i would find myself booking the plane ticket to many a State.  Thank god for the "angels".

thank god. i started at the top of this discussion and it was suspenseful to get to the bottom. glad she found a savior!  i once had someone dump a very young rabbit that had given birth that very day. in a plastic bin with just some newspaper in the bottom no less!. not surprisingly, the babies didn’t make it but she found a good home. some people should be shot. oh that was mean of me. o.O

We lost Lucky last night.

I woke up at 4:40 this morning, and I somehow knew something was wrong.  Lucky got little milk at his special feeding yesterday morning, and at his special feeding last night he would not grab onto a nipple at all.  He was very weak and kind of twitchy, and he started to look deformed.  His neck was too skinny and head too big, and his tiny body way too skinny.  I checked on the babies at 10 PM last night, and Marilyn had kicked him out of the nest.  He was lying by himself, alone in the middle of the Marchioro.  I picked him up and rubbed his tiny cheeks, and put him in a corner over the snuggle safe with his brothers.  He died sometime over night.

I keep telling myself he had no chance at survival, he got to live a week with us in a warm house surrounded by his siblings and his mom, at least he did not have to be executed at the shelter, but it still hurts.  The other 3 look great, big full bellies, their eyes open now, lots of fur.  Poor little Lucky just never had a chance.  Maybe he was a double dwarf, and just so genetically messed up that his body could not grow.  We’ll never know, but he is at peace now, and I can stop worrying about him now.

I buried him in the back yard next to the girls’ swing set, symbolic of his short relationship with the girls and our family.

Oh Osprey – I’m so sorry, that is too too sad. I’m glad he got the good care at your house in his short life. If it was a genetic problem then it’s probably a blessing that he didn’t survive but it’s still very sad – I think he was special and in his short life you were lucky that he touched you and your family.

Osprey, my coworkers and I are heartbroken. Lucky struck a chord with a group of people that really knew nothing of bunnies (and just assumed I was an animal crackpot) We have had more dialogs about rabbits and care because of him. They may not run out and adopt a bunny from a shelter, but I have stopped a few Easter impulse buys.

Bless you, your family and Markusdark for your efforts. For such a little guy, he had a huge impact.

On a more upbeat note, the three remaining babies are doing great!  I took some pictures tonight of the little family.  The babies have started to explore their cage outside of the nest, and they are scooting all over the place now.  I built a shelf in there out of two NIC panels so that Mom can get away from the babies.  They are constantly trying to nurse now.

Marilyn is a dwarf hotot.  Hotots have the black circles around their eyes and white fur.  She also has black ears, which is not part of the hotot standard.

We finally named the babies!  Heather likes to pick "sets" of related names for litters.  Since we do not know the genders yet, we chose the names of mountains.  So, please say hello to Denali, Lassen and Shasta!

You and your wife are doing an excellent job with that crew! The babies are gorgeous – as is the Mom. I have a Hotot myself and she is quite a character. The look of that breed is stunning (IMO). I call my girl Ansel since she’s white and black. Does Marilyn have any blue in her eyes? Ansel has a small swatch of blue in one of her eyes that makes her really stand  out.

I recently adopted to rabbits from Save A Bunny and if I’m not mistaken, they may have come from the shelter your little family was rescued from.

Welcome to BinkBunny!  Leaf participates in another bunny group that I go to called Rabbits Online, and she hopped over here to update us on her little splay legged babies.

Marilyn’s eyes are brown, but one of the babies, little Shasta, appears to have some blue in her eyes.  It is hard to tell with the babies since their eyes are still pretty small.

The litter that I am fostering came from a different shelter, but one of my bunnies, little Deanna, the white dwarf in my avatar, did come from that same shelter as your new babies.  Unfortunately, that shelter gets a lot of bunny dumps.

By the way, when I was leaving this last saturday, Osprey’s children were tending to the baby buns. I was watching them handling them, cleaning them, turing them over and so on and I was amazed at how professional they were. They handled those buns like ol’ time rabbit wranglers.

The other fun thing was watching Osprey running around with his camera going “Okey, which ones haven’t I taken a picture of yet?” trying to get images of all of the great buns up for adoption.

You know a shelter is doing a great job if everytime you approach a cage, the buns come right up to greet you. And eventhough they’re in a strange place with a lot of things going on, they’re still just as friendly and curious as if they were right at home.

Thanks Markusdark.  This was the first show for Marilyn and the babies.  Even though they are not adoptable yet, we brought them in to be sure that I had sexed them correctly.  They all had poopy butt, and one of the more experienced bunny ladies was showing my girls the proper way to clean up poopy butt (she uses pure mineral oil and a flea comb to get the sticky bits off).  We photographed over 20 bunnies on Saturday, and I took about 150 pictures.  We have a lot of babies right now, so they need new photos every few weeks.  It also helps to keep the website fresh when the photos are updated frequently.  Bunnies are a pain to take posed pictures of, they always move just before you want them to, so the girls help me by repositioning the buns and the props for new photos.  Even at their young ages they have already handled hundreds of bunnies, they are old pros where bunnies are concerned.

Well it just does my dang ego bad when I see an 8 year old who’d be able to handle/control Maryann better than I can.

It is much much much easier to handle buns at shows than it is at home.  They are out of their element, somewhat scared and looking for someone to help calm them.   Maryann is also easy for us to handle because she does not know us and is intimidated by us.  As long as she does not freak out, she will be submissive to the big, bad people she does not know.  Our bunny DJ is totally impossible for me to get onto his back to give meds or trim nails, but the people at the shows can do it with no trouble.  Maryann knows she can manipulate you at home, and she takes advantage of it 🙂

Well she found out Sunday morning that the manipulation only goes so far.

I thought I saw blood on her upper lip and after the little acrobatics she did with Heather, I was a little concerned.  She tried to squirm when I went to put her on her back but I guess my tone intimidated her when I told her to sit still.  She looked shocked but laid back and let me check out her mouth and teeth without so much as a twitch.

Good news is that somehow she had managed to brush the fur on her lip up towards her nose instead of down towards the teeth and what I mistook for blood was actually just her pink skin.  She likes to find new ways to put fear into me…

Marilyn was quite miffed that the babies got to be stars and she was not included, so we did a video of Marilyn too.  The soundtrack is “Wonder” by Natalie Merchant,  because it is a wonder that she survived and managed to raise her little family.  You can see the video on YouTube.

Yes, she is a marking fiend.  It’s funny too, because all of the boxes in her area have only been used by her and her babies.  The willow tunnel may still have some residual smell of Suttara on it, but she really likes to chin things.

The babies are 8 weeks old on Saturday.  I am a little sad because now they are adoptable, and we’ll be taking them to their first adoption event this weekend.  Shasta has an adoption appointment on Saturday morning, and the two boys will likely go to another foster home this weekend so that we can focus on getting Marilyn spayed and ready for her forever home.  I have really grown attached to these little guys in the 2 months they have been with us, particularly Shasta.  We did our job, and now they deserve a home of their own.  I should have new pictures tonight or tomorrow.

I don’t think I could foster for that reason. I could never part with any of those guys. Has it only been 2 months? It seems so much longer since that first post.

Oh by the way…Osprey, I can’t get that song “follow the leader” out of my head! Thank you so much. The voices aren’t noisy enough.   LOL

i wonder what it is that makes some people so interested in animal safety and others could just happily let an animal starve and die without it even bothering their conscience, i remember one weekend i went to visit warwick castle and had been soo scared if my dogs had enough food and water outside (it was august) to last them from 9am till 9pm and all day i was like ‘do u think the dogs are ok? do u think i left them enough food? do u think their water wil stay cool?’ i was in such a panic all day it was the longest i had left them on their own! they had 2 bowls of biscuits and i fed them their meat dinner in the morning they had 2 bowls of water and a bucket each in shade with ice cubes and yet i couldnt stop worrying! and there are other people who move out and leave cats, dogs, birds, rabbits or whatever in the house and just carry on with life? i just dont understand it it makes me so sad!

omg they are soo cute! im sorry you had to go through the loss of lucky but you did all you could and their fate could have been much worse had you not have stepped in so remember that!

Shasta was adopted today!  The boys Denali and Lassen have gone home with Auntie Heather so that Marilyn can rest up and get ready for her spay surgery.  Marilyn will stay with us for a while yet until she is spayed and ready to be adopted.

I finally got to finish this whole thread…after stopping to get tissues….what a marvelous story!

You are all are wonderful to work so very hard to save these bunnies!

I wish I didn’t have to take in any of the bunnies I did! Since all of mine are a direct result of overflow shelters, foster homes, pet owners not being able to care for them, feeder farms, and well lonely depressed solitary pet store bunnies! I wish there were happy homes for them all, and people would read before they take on pets just because they are cute and furry.  Hopefully, one day….. until then it’s really nice to have found this place to see people working hard to make sure bunnies don’t get put to sleep and have a great home!

Marilyn is still here with us.  She needs another week of recuperation and then she can be spayed.  Once she recovers from her spay, she will be available for adoption.

I just dropped Marilyn off at the Palo Alto Spay/Neuter clinic for her spay.  I can get her at 3 PM.  Poor little thing, I am a little worried about her.

Marilyn is home now, doing remarkably well. She’s already eaten some carrot tops, dandelions, a little hay and a few treats. I am going to give her some metacam tonight for pain.

glad to hear her spay went well!  how is the sweet marilyn today?  has she continued to eat & drink osprey?

She is doing quite well.  Lots of poops, I have seen her browsing some oat hay and some grass hay, and she is eating greens and treats.  She is recovering remarkably fast, at this rate she will not even need any Metacam tomorrow.

Well, my part in the Marilyn saga is over.  Marilyn moved out today and went home to a new foster site.  It is very strange looking over at her side of the living room and not seeing those little black ears pointing at me.  She had a couple of people interested in her at our adoption show today, so I am confident that she will be adopted soon.

Shasta and her beau stopped by today to get their nails done.  What a great bunny family she found for herself.  They are totally devoted to their bunnies, they will provide her with a great home.

Thats great that the whole family is doing so well! You should feel so proud of yourself for being responsible for the great lives these buns are now leading I just love it when a foster bun gets adopted, especially when they get spoiled and get a companion as well! Marilyn’s foster mom needs to be “bunny free” for a couple of weeks while she has some out of town visitors, so Marilyn is going to move back in with us for a few weeks.  I hope I don’t fall in love with her again…

Marilyn was adopted tonight!  She was adopted by a really great family, with two sons almost the same age as my daughters.  When I took her out of the carrier tonight, the boys completely fell in love with her.  They may try to adopt a companion for her soon, too.  The Dad of the family was full of excellent questions, listened to my adoption spiel with great attention, and really wants what is best for Marilyn.  All in all, I am very pleased with her new family.
