        Hello all,

I’m new here, but not new to bunnies.  We grew up in 4H and at six, I showed 2 French Lops and a Netherland (along w/a pony and the most BEE-U-TEE-FUL chicken).  When we moved down to Idaho (oh, joyful desert), we got away from "the farm life".  My Netherland was a PEW, TinyTim.  So, when I was a "real" adult I had an "impulse" buy from one of those icky pet stores, a PEW Netherland (possible cross or badly bred) and though I knew better than to support that store (he was the ONLY thing I ever bought there), I couldn’t help myself.  Home came NudgeBunny and filled my life w/joy for 12 years.  I put him down this past winter when his bad days began to outnumber the good.  Hubby didn’t want another bun, but I was crusing Craigslist and found Hoss, a broken tortiseshell Holland Lop.  He is so much more obstinate than Nudge, that’s for sure!  I hope to have as many years w/him.  I would desperatly LOVE to have a lion head, but only have room for one bun…and 5 dogs, 12 frogs, 6 fish, 1 snake and 18 birds.  I could have gotten a lion head, rather than Hoss, but his pic on Craigslist just spoke to me.

Here’s a pic, hope it isn’t too big to view.  Named him Hoss because I’m a fan of the old Bonaza shows and Hoss was always wearing a white shirt w/that reddish vest and I though the colors matched my bun, plus his face looks like the actor, Dan, that played Hoss.

Awww, what a cutie! Congrats on rescuing a bunny, with all that animal experience I’m sure he must be in good hands. Keep us posted on how he’s doing!
            Also, welcome to BinkyBunny, BobbiesZoo!
Wow, it sounds like you really DO have a lot on your hands – 18 birds?! You must have quite the set-up. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong on this, but this is area is fine for non-bunny stuff too if you want to show off some of your other pets as well I’d be interested in seeing how you manage to house all that!

Welcome!! So here’s my burning question. How do you get any sleep with all those birds? Or are you an early bird yourself?
Hoss is beautiful. Why would anyone want to give that adorable guy up. I am so glad you gave him a loving home. So give us some examples of his obstinance.

We live in an old, single wide.  Aquatic frogs in the living room, land frogs and finches in the kitchen (can’t hear their beutiful music in the bird room and I don’t cook a lot and when I do, I’m careful), snake in the spare bathroom that also serves as a holding pen for a pug or two when we are gone.  Rest of birds and bunny in half of back room, other half is man junk.  A few cages are stacked, not many though, they are just lined up around the walls and one is sorta in the middle of the room.  It’s cramped, but what are ya’ gonna do?  My critters are my life and I take very good care of them, best of everything and always willing to learn anything new so they can always have what they want and need.

They have a bird room, ‘cept the finches.  But, birds sleep at night, just like the rest of us, very rarely the occassional night fright.  I am NOT an early bird!!!  The one ‘Too does get covered as I think his former person did so and he’s used to it.  Also, since the finches are out in the main part of the house, they get covered so they can sleep better.  In the morning, I usually uncover the one ‘Too and then just close their door.  I let the finches stay covered a bit longer to be sure they have gotten enough rest.  If I want to go back to bed, I close my door as well and unless you think about it really hard, you don’t hear them.

As I understand it, Hoss was bred by a 4H gal and she was going to keep him to put back into her lines, then decieded to keep his sister instead.  I think he may be a little large for the breed.

He loves to stomp when I get into his cage or when it’s time to go back to the cage.  He pulls ALL of his hay out of the hay rack and he likes to pick just the goodies out of his food and leave the pellets.  His cage is a wire bottomed cage so the hay falls into the under tray.  But, I provide a placemat so he’s not standing on wire, and he has a pile of hay in the back corner as well, so his feet are protected.

Rabbit do do that. Funny. When they are mad or upset a thumpfest can begin. I noticed you said he likes to pick out just the goodies? I know some pellets have seeds and stuff included with pellets. I don’t recommend this kind because they are usually too high in fat , calcium & protein, and not high enough in fiber, which can lead to serious digestive problems over time (or sometimes even overnight)

I use Oxbow Bunny Basics Timothy for adults because it has the recommended fiber percentages from the HRS: This is what the nutritional value is of these pellets and they are a good guideline to go for any pellet you choose.
                        Crude Protein min 14.00%
                        Crude Fat min 1.50%
Crude Fiber max 29.00%   (HRS recommends 18% as a MINIMUM)
                        Calcium max 0.85%

If you end up looking at the nutrional values of yours, and you feel he needs something better, even if you choose a healthier higher fiber pellet, be sure to change gradually – over a month.

5 dogs, 12 frogs, 6 fish, 1 snake and 18 birds?? And my friends all accuse me of having a zoo! Haha

I figured most of those birds much have been finches! I’m thinking of getting some myself. I love birds so much, but I only have a cockatiel. And she’s a total b*tch! She only likes MEN! Haha. I have an extra tank so I’m thinking of getting some pacman frogs or something

I know some people don’t agree w/the "gourmet" rabbit food, but it did NudgeBunny just fine for 12 years.  I just can’t imagine eating plain ol’ pellets, since we would want to give him treats anyhow.

He gets unlimited hay, so has plenty of fiber.

Only 2 are finches (Java Rice Finches), the other are parrots, from ‘Toos to a Parrotlet.

Keep that Pacman…singular.  They’ll eat one another if you keep more than one, unless you tank is big enough to "subdivide".  If you want a really cool frog, look into Pixie Frogs, or African BullFrogs, they are "in your face" and very aggressive feeders.

How do you like the parrotlet? They seem like neat little birds. And with all those birds your house must be so loud! Especially with cockatoos!

Yeah, he’s neat, little PitBull that he is!    Very cage possesive, but otherwise fine.  He is so tiny though that I don’t let him out because he won’t stay on his gym and he’s going to get stepped on or something, when he flies off, he’s very quiet and you can’t find him!

It’s not too loud, for the most part.  One ‘Too, Morgan, is loud because his former person had him out 24/7 and he is not used to having to spend the day in his cage.  At 14, it will take him some time…we’ve only had him since last year.  The other ‘Too really isn’t loud at all, just a ButtMunch.  You wanna talk loud?  Leela the Ringneck can peel paint off the walls and set your ear drums to bleed.  She was in a pet store for over a year, bought, abused and returned in that time.  I finally couldn’t stand it any longer and brought her home (I’d go in that store once a week for a product only they carried, so I’d always go visit her).  Within one week, she chose me as her person but is completly terrified of others.  When we have to have my sister come take care of the critters, Leela just goes in her corner and hides.

When it gets too loud, we just shut the bird room door.  We allow them to be loud as often as we can, because, after all, they’re birds and birds are loud and messy, but what are ya’ gonna do…they each love us in their own way.  Well, Shake’NBake and I don’t care for one another (long story), but we make due.

So how many birds are in one room? I’m fascinated. I’ve also never seen a ringneck in person! Pretty, though! Someday I want to have a nice medium/large bird… possibly an African Gray. I’m trying to train my boyfriend to not be afraid of birds! It took him months just to go near my ‘tiel and she’s harmless!! He watched Hitchcock’s “The Birds” when he was really little and I guess it scarred him for life, hahaha! My favorite pet store has birds out everywhere and they’re one huge cockatoo and he is so terrified of it! It’s cute.

                                      Yes, she’s a turquoise mutation.

                                      >Someday I want to have a nice medium/large bird… possibly an African Gray.

Grey’s are very neat, but can be  very neurotic.  We almost got one last year and decided against it, saying we really didn’t need another bird, especially a bigger one…then along came Morgan, but he was meant to be.

                                      >I’m trying to train my boyfriend to not be afraid of birds! It took him months just to go near my ‘tiel and she’s >harmless!!

Ever watch "My Name Is Earl"?  His brother Randy has a severe phobia of birds, but he didn’t let it faze him when he was going to Mexico to get the love of his life back.  Maybe you can work something like that…."Honey, if you love me, get me a Grey".

Haha, yeah, I watch Earl. It cracked me up in like the third episode where a chicken walked by Randy and he freaked out.

As far as my boyfriend goes, he’s made some progress and I know some very nice birds elsewhere that I can train him into trusting a medium sized bird with.
