I’m planning an NIC condo and I’m wondering if it’s possible/advisable to use extra NIC panels to make a little fenced in area connected to the condo?  Sort of like having an X pen play yard.  I just want to make sure it would be stable enough.

I found some 16″x10″ and 10″x10″ NIC panels at a retail store supply website which I might try instead of the standard 14″x14″.  Have to see what works better for our space.

Anyway, I am enjoying all the interesting posts and great ideas/advice I’m finding on this forum.

Yep, perfectly safe. Just make sure you secure the panels tightly. Also, remember rabbits can jump… so you want to make it tall enough your bunny won’t escape. I’ve seen plenty of people use NIC panels outside to make a run around the cage.

If you are worried about the stability, you can always make the walls slightly zigzag instead of straight. Also make sure the squares within each panel is small ~1inch or your rabbit can escape through.

Wow – I’d never have thought a rabbit could escape through such a small space!  I guess 2 square inches is big enough to get a small head through…

Welcome! Absolutely it’s fine to make a run with panels. My rabbits are lazy and two squares high works fine. If you have an adventurous bun you might have to 3 or 3 1/2 high. You can also zig zag your zip ties to make it more sturdy, use the round clip peices to make it more stable AND you can put a cube or two at right angles to give it stability. That’s how I made a wall of cubes between my two pairs, every two cubes I put a cube at a right angle on either side and secured with bricks on the end. We never had a security breach

I just measured the squares. The 1.5 inches are ok. I have panels slightly below and slightly above. I also have 2.5 inched ones which are NOT ok; I bought some used ones that had mixed panels. So, with the 2.5 inched ones, I ziptied some cloth onto it.

I actually have one 2.5 inched panel I didn’t put cloth on becuase I only use it as a support and have another layer with smaller squares going over it as the door for my condo. One day when the door was opened, I saw my bun squeeze his whole body thew it; he is my larger bun too! Of course, I have dwarfs but still, it was quite shocking to see. Buns are made mostly of fluff =).
