Hey everyone! I just got my first “house” bunny. I grew up with Bunnies, but they always lived outside. I can NEVER imagine my parent’s letting me have a bunny in the house. And truthfully, I wasn’t planning on this bunny being a house bunny either when I offered to take him home. I work at an animal shelter as a surgical technician. This bunny was brought in because he was loose and a woman was complaining that he was eating her flowers. She actually thought at first that he was a wild bunny! Our shelter only handles cats and dogs, but I fell in love immediately and home he came. He’s living in a cage (36×30) right now, with plans to build a cube cage sometime in the very near future. My daughter and I completely love him to death. We named him Remmington, call him “Remmy” for short.

I’m just wondering, has anyone else ever gotten a bunny from the “wild”? We’re thinking that he must have been let loose when somebody no longer wanted him. He’s the best bunny I’ve ever met. He’s litter trained, walks on a harness and is very good about not scratching or biting. We’ve had him a little over a week….and I’m already buying toys for him. I actually enjoy having him more than I’ve enjoyed have a dog…who knew?

I think, he knows he has been saved, he’s a lucky bun!! I’m so glad you decided to give him a loving FOREVER home!! sounds like, he found himself a nice loving family.

I will just never ever “understand” those ppl, who set the pet bunnies free and leave them to fend for themselves!! they CANNOT survive in the wild…

hey kayla… welcome here   glad you joined us!  remmy sounds very sweet.  he sure is lucky to have found his way to you.  do you have any pics to share? 

i think there are a couple of members here who also rescued a bunny that was loose… hopefully they chime in.  unfortunately ‘letting bunnies loose’ seems to be a common way of disposing of an unwanted pet   but at least we get to hear of some happy endings here!

I adopted one of my rabbits from a shelter and he was a stray too. I don’t know what parts of his behavior might have been affected by his time outdoors, though!

welcome here. what kind of condition was he in? did the woman who brought him in say how long he’d been “eating her flowers”? oftentimes bunnies that are dumped are not actually outside for that long. they are either rescued, if they’re lucky, or die. they’re not equipped to live in the wild. the natural, wild bunny instincts have been mostly bred out of them. did he have a thorough exam at your shelter? were they able to determine if he had been neutered and what his approx. age is? he sounds like such a sweetie-pie! yes, pics please!

We did give him an exam (and a bath) at the shelter. He isn’t neutered and is an older bunny, though being primarily a companion animal (not an exotics/pocket pet) vet they weren’t able to make an exact determination of age. He’s got an appointment w/ a bunny vet in 2 weeks. He’d actually been spotted in her yard for the last 4-6 weeks, so it’s amazing that he’d make it so long. His coat is very sunbleached and he had lots of bug bites and small wounds, mostly scratches that have all pretty much healed. He is the best bunny I could ever ask for…

What a lucky bunny! I’m so glad you fell in love with him.

I’m glad you found a vet too that has experience with rabbits.

I’ve gotten quite a few bunnies from the “wild” and I think there are so many different reasons that these rabbits end up this way – they escape their hutch outside or someone does just let them loose not understanding the difference between wild and domesticated. Either way it’s not good for the bunny.

I love the name Remmington too – what a neat name.

Nobody tells you about the copious amounts of charm that bunnies have that make you fall for them!!!!!!  If they had little fingers, we’d be well wrapped around them!  Maybe they have us wrapped around their little fluffy tails!

How do you become a surgical technician?  It’s sounds like something I’d like to do.

I’m currently taking classes online through Penn Foster college in Veterinary Technology. The program is awesome and it’s very affordable.
In Vermont, you don’t have to be licensed/registered to be a veterinary technician. You can train on the job, so that’s what I’ve done with my surgical tech work. Basically, I prepare the OR and our treatment room, clean and maintain surgical instruments (autoclaving, etc), induce anesthesia and tranquilizers, prep the animal for surgery (shaving, placing IVs, trach tubes, etc.) and then I monitor anesthesia during the actual surgery.
I’m in surgery there 2 days a week, 3 other days I just do regular cleaning duties and help our head tech with whatever she needs.
I absolutely love my job, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

My Pepper was found in the “wild” by Animal Care & Control.  We think she was a former cute baby easter bunny who got dumped when she hit puberty – the intake sheet lists her as “very hormonal”, and I’ll bet she was a right beeotch!  But after  a spay and nearly a year in rescue and foster care (she picked up pasteurella somewhere along the line, poor thing), I adopted her nearly 2 years ago and now she’s a spoiled bunny-princess.

Thanks for the info!  I’ve looked at Surgery Technician in hospitals before but never even thought about that in the veterinary field.  It sounds so interesting so i’m looking into it further.

From the look of your rabbit, he is definatley a domesticaed breed and not a wild rabbit. He is very lucky to have survived his whoel ordeal and even luckier to have a loving home.

Hello and Welcome!! My Rupert was a stray as well…He was probably dumped. Unfortunately he broke his leg while stray (or maybe before) and it healed crooked…But he’s my special boy anyways
