I built Rory a large condo over the weekend (averages 4Lx3Wx2D grids), and he’s shown comfort while visiting it last night, as he flopped within 20 minutes of being placed inside. However, I’m hesitant to move him permanently just yet because the region I’m in is going through a somewhat unusual heat wave, and the temperature will regularly be over 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day this coming week; last week was consistently above 90. I’m hoping it will abate within a few weeks, but in the meantime Rory is unfortunately stuck in his far smaller store-bought cage, as it is in the bedroom where the air conditioner is located, while the condo is in the downstairs living room and is too large to move upstairs without dissassembling it (and I’d rather it stay in the living room, as it is far easier to bunnyproof).

I was wondering if there was any way Rory could be safely moved to the condo sooner without fear of overheating. Would something cool in the cage such as a wrapped ice bottle or cold soaked cloth be acceptable, or is it better to simply wait it out? I’m pretty torn over the issue.

And for anyone wondering how 85 degrees is “unusually warm” in July, I live in Western New York; summers are usually fairly mild.

Freeze bottles of water (don’t screw it completely tight when you put it in the freezer) and wrap in towels. You can also get ceramic tiles for your bun to lay down on. The bunny info tab up top has other ideas I think.

I don’t know what kind of place you live in, but sometimes houses are cooler indoors than outdoors and sometimes vice versa. Where I am currently, my room is much cooler so it can be upper 80s or 90s outdoors before it’s hot enough to have to cool my buns down. So check your indoor temp, not just outside. Also, depending on the flooring of the condo or walls, if you have anything on the walls, the bun condo may also be cooler. I put cloth on a couple panels so there’s shade.

Ceramic tiles are good because you can chill ’em in the fridge or the freezer for a bit. If they come out too cold, wrap em in a towel and give to bunny. Your hunch of ice bottles – wrapped in a thin towel or not – is right on target. Good luck! You can also blow a fan over parts of bunny’s area so he can lie in its breeze if he so chooses.

I suppose monitor him when you are home during the heat to see if it’s not effecting him too much. Then you might feel more relaxed about leaving him in the condo.

This has reminded me about the “poor mans air conditioner” from the Bunny info page here. You could hang some loose weave cloth on one side of the condo, wet it and set up a fan to gently blow through it to get the evaporative cooling effect.

PIctures it is, as Rory has been successfully moved to the condo. I’ve been using the frozen water bottle, cycling three of them over the day, and he’s not showing any signs of discomfort.

It’s definitely a big improvement over the first cage; it looks huge in comparison!

From what I can tell he’ll be quite happy with his new home. There’s so much room now! Maybe he’ll be getting a friend sometime in the future…
