Bambi is in need of some new housing quarters until i can build her luxury condo. Right now she is in a X-pen making a complete mess and the step-mom is angry at me. She hates the bunnies in the first place but i had told her this rabbit is litter trained but Bambi isnt showing her skills too well…so there is bunny poops and hay all over the place. Step-mom is NOT happy. I was thinking about the NIC cage thing but how clean would it be? I need something that can be temperorary and cheap. Any ideas? Shes a ND so it doesnt need to be huge but i want her happy too

In my opinion an x-pen is the easiest to clean just because it’s easier to get in and out of and move around because it’s the most portable. I have Leith condos as well as x-pens for some of my rabbits and those are easy for me to too.

I’ve never done the NIC condo’s but I think unless you can have a front that opens all the way out it sounds to me like it might be a challenge to clean. But I’ve never personally had one only had friends with them.

I would keep her in the x pen and get some sort of flooring that can “wrap up” over the edges, so stray poops and hay don’t fly out everywhere. I agree that x pens are easy to clean and if you already have one, why change? Also, get a litterbox big enough so that she doesn’t pee over the sides or that she can’t kick litter out of easily. She can be littertrained in no time and then your SM can be happy. Also, try to explain to your SM that rabbit poop is sort of like horse poop, dry and not smelly.

I would keep the x-pen also…perhaps a covered litterbox to keep Bambi’s poops inside.

the problem is she isnt pooping in her litterbox, her poops are everywhere else and her litter ends up everywhere because she is digging in it. I will go to walmart and see what type of plastic stuff they have that i can put under the x-pen. Right now we have an old blanket that she is pooping and peeing on, so maybe something not so fluffy so she wont want to use it as a litter box?? My SM just hates them in general and thinks they are rodents [i always correct her but to no avail]…I love my bunnies and i wonder why some people dont lol.

I have had both – xpen and cube condo and I can tell you that from my experience…the pen is SOOOOO much easier. If I remember right, bambi is relatively new to your home. There are also litterboxes that have lipped sides that also helps keep litter in.

I’m sorry you are battling about this with your stepmother. It can be tricky when a rabbit comes into a new home…but ya know what…the same thing can happen with a cat or dog. A new place, new stressors all can contribute to having to retrain. So hopefully she will be more understanding.

I would also recommend putting some treats in with the hay IN the litterbox, to encourage Bambi to get in there,. Also, rabbits will normally poo and pee more around meal time. So if you can change their feeding schedule around where the bulk of their feedings will happen when you can supervise, this may help with the re-training.

i think you’re on to something about the floor covering for your pen. maybe try something easier to keep clean and free of smells–maybe something plastic or some scrap linoleum (set up so they can’t eat it!). if she can smell her urine on the “fluffy” floor, it’s probably more likely that she’ll keep peeing there instead of where you want her to in the litter pan. we have a plastic tray covered in cheap cotton towels in our pen, but peeing is something that our bunny is 100% good about…but if he did have an accident, they are really easy to clean and interchangable.

while i know some people use the fully-covered litter pans, they’re a bit small for our bun, so we use a high-backed litter pan. he still kicks some things out, but it keeps 95% of the stuff in there.

I ended up just re-covering the floor in scrap cardboard..so she can chew on it if she pleases. I also added another box for her to sit in so maybe she will use her litterbox more as a litterbox instead. Her foster mom gave me a towel with her scent on it so i stuffed it in the secondary box..so she has a lounge box and a litterbox. Im hoping this helps. She has gotten better with her territorial aggression, she actually let me hand feed her today
