new bunny’s cage and storage, comments and suggestions please!

well i’ve welcomed the little one home! as of yet he/she is still nameless but i have some contenders! I wanted to show off my cage setup for you guys! it’s an XL (great dane sized) dog crate with a pretty basic setup so far…

we’ve got a hidey house on the right, ended up being a little bigger than i expected… is there a certain size hidey boxes should be for it to be comfortable? i got the hay rack from Homegoods, it’s actually an over-counter shampoo storage thing that i found when i was not satisfied with the traditional hay rack options. the water bottle i am considering changing, but thats what they had at the pet store and i wasn’t sure about its tossing habits so didn’t want to risk a messy water dish fiasco! lastly, i have a little dog food bowl and a small cat litter box with some yesterdays news in there. s/he hasn’t figured out how to use it yet, or even how to get inside although s/he has been successful a few times! the brown paper in there i threw in to give it something to play with and shred up, which so far was a very good idea lol

on top of the cage i have the red rubbermaid bin i have my hay in, without a lid for breathability. the box in the middle is extra stuff to make some homemade toys with, and the box on the end has the bag of litter, the food container, and some cleaning supplies. it’s all roughly put together until i have time to reorganize. let me know what you think!

I love it! This is very similar to the first cage set up that I had for my Bun! She loved it! I ended up buying her a cage from Petsmart (that she also loves) because I needed my dog crate back. My doggies go jealous and started to go potty on the carpet instead of on the pee-pads. All I noticed when I had this set up, was that my Bun needs a bigger litter box once she started sleeping in it, and I needed to make the holes in the “hidey” box bigger for her to hop in and out easily. But like I said, it looks like a great little home for your Bun!

Thank you! I forgot to mention, the tarp under the cage is more for my roommates’ piece of mind more than anything. It’s “purpose” is to catch anything that’s kicked out of the cage (not that my shop vac couldn’t handle it but the roomies don’t want to take any chances) any suggestions regarding that are also welcome. Anything to keep the housemates happy lol

Coroplast for under the cage would be my suggestion. It is the hard plastic that signs are made of and can be bought for pretty cheap from graphic design and sign shops. Since it is plastic, it can be easily cleaned and won’t fall apart when wet. It is also tough so it won’t wrinkle or crinkle. Plus it can’t accidently be kicked up within your bunny’s reach and pulled through the bars as a snack.
My other suggestion for under the cage is those foam play mats that snap together. That is what I currently have under one of my cages and I bought a pack of 4 for $12 at Walmart. They are really durable and easy to clean, but since they are foam you have to watch that your bunny doesn’t try to chew it when she is outside of the cage.

I had to ditch water bottles because they always leaked. And my buns love to play frisbee with their dishes, even the heavy ceramic ones. I ended up buying the crock dishes that screw onto the side of the cage and that would be a great option for you if you decide to ditch the bottle. One of the ones I have needs to be fully unscrewed in order to clean and refill it, but the other one just twists and the bowl comes off of the bracket; both are super easy though. I fully take them off every morning, but for top ups throughout the day I just poke a watering can through the bars and refill it that way.

My water bottle problem ended up being that it was falling and I was afraid bunny would get hurt so I got a heavy plastic crock that it seems to like better and so far it’s only spilled when bunny attempted a flying leap out of the cage and landed on the dish lol hopefully it learned its lesson and that won’t happen again

That’s the exact same cage my bunnies have I kept them in there when I first got them as I’d heard that’s best for letting them get used to their new surroundings. Now they have the door of the cage constantly open and have free reign in my bedroom. They tend to only wander back in to go to the loo (the litter trays are there). I keep boxes of the hay/food/cleaning things on top of it too (great minds!)

I think your bunny should be just fine in there
