I recently got my Holland Lop, Caesar, this Sunday and by the second day, Caesar finally got out and explored a bit and ran around a bit. The hardwood floor intimidated him and could be why he doesn’t want to leave the cage but usually he gets over it and rests in some corners of my room. And I always leave his doors open aswell if he ever felt like wanting to roam around since I plan on making him a free roamer ( or at least, in my room for now ) and yesterday he didn’t get out at all and I left the doors open too. Is it because he’s still new to the surroundings and doesn’t trust me yet or any other reason?? I think we’ve been bonding sucessfully since now he eats out off my hand and likes to smell me and nudges me but does anyone have answers??

It’s probably a mixture of being new and the hardwood. He’ll probably pee on it, but can you put old blankets or towels down? I live in all hardwood, but I put down lots of ratty blankets and they binky like there’s no tomorrow. The other thing is that he is new. So it might take him some time to want to explore. Asriel was very shy and timid when I first got my boys. Bombur was sleeping and cuddling with us on the first day, but Az was much different. It took him a good month or two before he felt like he could leave his cage for long periods. He would come out in quick bursts. Even now he prefers his cage and he’s almost 2 years old. silly bun. Just keep it open for him and he’ll do his thing

If he’s from a home that didn’t let him out that’s a good part of it. I agree with A&B, the stress from the move into your house and hardwood floors may make him unsure.
I would do the blankets too, or get some cheap bath mats or rugs that you are willing to throw out if they get a lot of pee on them.
