New Bunny Hutch

My grandpa (bless his soul) has always loved projects, so he was happy to help when I asked him to assist me in building a cage for my buns. He found a hutch for sale for 20 bucks and we tweaked the wire and tightened it. We also added a plank at the bottom covered in stick on vinyl flooring from hope depot (that looks amazing!) to make it easier to clean as there was no floor before. Progress pics are below. I’m super happy with the way it turned out, and Thumper loves to relax and eat some pellets on the “lawn” after jumping up and down between different stories.

For now, since the bunnies are both too young to be going through puberty or in danger of getting pregnant, they live together. Thumper has pretty much claimed the top two levels for herself because Baxter likes to be on the far side of the cage under the second story. Once they’re too old to be together, we’re going to block the top two floors off for Thumper and Baxter will have the bottom floor, but for now, they sure do love their bunny cuddles.

I’m confused – are your bunnies free range and this is just a station they can retreat too ( but not be enclosed in?)

The sizing looks to be about 1meter long from the photos and if so it will not be adaquate sizing for two bunnies ( even one full grown )
Also you said about separated the two levels so one will live in the bottom and one on top but you know the top would need enclosed in right? They will easily hop over the wee fence on top and once on the ground they can mate / fight through the mesh

Oh my goodness! This is the cutest hutch I’ve seen in a long time! Well done to your grandpa!

I’m not sure how old your two little clouds are, but until reproductive maturity is on the horizon, they’ll be as snug as two cute bugs in a rug in their little house.

Somebody is home 90% of the time, so when we are home/awake, the buns have free range of the living room and kitchen. We haven’t bunny proofed enough yet and they aren’t litter trained, obviously, so we can’t let them run around 24/7 just yet. Also, there is a door for the little house upstairs that goes on when they have to go in for the night. The hutch is so big that I can comfortably fit inside of it, lol, so I am thinking it will be adequate space until they are grown and litter trained. They’re both pretty tiny at the moment.

It looks cute and all but it also looks tiny. Just because the buns are small doesn’t necessarily mean they require less space. I’m glad they can free roam 90% of the time.

Despite size, I think it’s very cute!

Wick has a small hutch as well, so one thing from my experience is putting a sealant or cover over the seam of wall-to-floor, in addition to a couple inches up each wall.. The wood will soak in any urine. I dowse the wooden ramp in Wick’s hutch in vinegar every time because it’s not sealed.

I did end up going to the store to buy them a play pen so now they have more space while we’re gone or asleep.

Thanks for the tip! My grandpa is pretty old so I didn’t want to ask too much of him lol right now i covered the bottom panel in an old towel and it’s working pretty well, but hopefully only need to use it until they’re litter trained.
