Hi Guys. I’ve been straining my brain and asking around for anyone willing to adopt this 1-year old lop little girl bun. A mutual friend keeps coming back to me as a bun lover, and I so wish I could help. Bonding my current pair took 6 solid months of bunny dates. My girl, Brandy, is very territorial….total head bun. The person lives in the northern suburbs of Chicago (Lake Zurich area for anyone familiar). I know HRS people are pretty full…which is normal for them. I’m just wondering if anyone has any ideas I can tell this person. Unfortunately, it’s a situation where the person got it for her daughter who doesn’t take care of the bun. The mother doesn’t want the bun anymore. I really hate the idea of the bun being in an unwanted situation, but I just want to tell this person of a safe place to take the little lop. Thanks for any ideas!

We don’t know where you live, but I would recommend you do two searches. One on Petfinder.com to see where the bunnies advertised on there that live the closest to your town are available. They usually list all local shelters that have bunnies, so scan the rabbit lists nearest your zip code to find the nearest rabbit shelters. She can take her bunny there. Of course, we highly recommend she just learn more about bunnies and take the responsibility, but if they won’t, there may be more than the HRS.

The other is to use the HRS website to do a vet finder for your area and call local vets to see if they can help rehome the bunny.

Please do not use this website as a way of getting one of our members to offer to take it. That is not allowed and the post will be deleted. Local vets and rescues are your best bet for help that is safer than advertising on Craigslist for example. Also, she can post on Petfinder herself I think.

Often rescues will promote the bunny on PetFinder and at their rescue while the original owners or a foster family takes care of the bun. I’d tell her to contact rescues and start by getting her bunny’s info up on PetFinder and go from there.

Thanks I’ll look into Petfinder. While I’m leaving this as a potential, I can’t imagine going through this, but is there someone who’s had success with a 3-bun bond that can tell me about whether this would be the nightmare I anticipate? As I said above, I have 2 bonded buns that took 6 months of bunny dates and pee wars. My girl is very domineering and territorial. (The bunny I’m contemplating is a 1-year old girl LOP.)

As far as bonding into a trio, this can be difficult. Especially with two girls who, as you’re aware, can be very territorial. I would only recommend you take in this bunny with the understanding that she is likely to be a single bun forever. If having her in a separate habitat with separate exercise time (for 10+ years) is a deal-breaker to you, then don’t do it. I’m also guessing she isn’t spayed, so that’s something else that would fall on you.

The HRS does not take owner surrendered rabbits, but the Chicago chapter may have some suggestions of places that your friend could try.

Here are a couple of rescues (no kill shelters) in Illinois, the first is in Chicago and the second is in German Valley. These links were found on the HRS site.
