Check out my sketchup design for a new bunny complex I’ll build for our bunnies once they’ve bonded:

Hopefully you get the idea. It’s 4′ wide and 18″ tall at the middle, designed to be housed withina  standard 4ft x 4ft X-pen. There is a “walkway” that goes all the back, with a tunnel underneath made from 8″ diameter cardboard tubes. It had 2 entraces in the front and one on either side on teh upper level. The idea is that the bunnies each have sleeping quarters, 2 upper levels they can climb onto and a tunnel so they can do a circuit of the X-pen, including the tunnel.

Let me know what you think!!

That looks really cool! You’ll have to make sure they can’t launch themselves off it and jump out tho!

Cheers, I’m loving “Sketchup” right now. I’m thinking of getting some of the more common bunny-related objects designed in it, so people can use it as a tool for designing bunny habitats

One question I have, for those of you with DIY habitats, what do folks mainly use to join wooden components? Screws, wood/dowels/nails or none of the above?

I was a bit reluctant to use screws/nails, in case of accidental chewing but glue/dowel is a bit more of a challenge to fabricate for the novice DIY’er methinks.

Dovetail joints?….no, just kidding!   Making it safe is tricky though.   If you use nails or screws you would have to sink them but then keep checking that the rabbits haven’t chewed down to them.  My only though is you cover the areas where they could chew down to a nail with sea grass matts or some other safe item. Again though, that’s not exactly rabbit proof either as they could still go at the wood. I’d be interested to hear what others have done. That’s a very swish bunny burrow you’ve designed!

Cheers. I might just use countersunk screws and make sure the wood’s thick enough that they won’t be able to get to them. I’ve managed to update the design with their food, water bowls, willow mat and hay basket, all exactly to scale. I’m becoming a Sketchup fan-boy!!

oh wow that’s pretty cool I love all the hidey holes and tunnels.

My concern would be trying to clean it out. I think it might be possibe to make is so the middle level’s top slides in and out; maybe have something bunny-proof to latch it down so it doesn’t slide around. Than maybe attach the top level’s floor with a hinge and something to latch it down so you could open it like a chest. That way you can clean the insides much easier. Bunnies are only so clean ;D
