new bunny cage – thoughts

Hi all! It’s been a long time since I’ve been on binkybunny. been so busy with work and stuff, time just flies by. I’m thinking of buying a new bunny cage for my bunnies. I saw the Leith Petwerks abodes and they look great. I was wondering if anyone knew of a chaper alternative for that kind of wooden cage with carpeting. you can check them out at http://www.leithpetwerks.com.  Or are they the best ones to get? I wanted to do some research before I buy since those aren’t very cheap but I feel my bunnies would be more comfortable with the space and amenities. I feel like they’re getting a hotel room! lol. and also are all the accessories a good idea to get? They have chew gaurds, urine gaurds, plastic carpeting, etc. If anyone has one and has some advise to share, please do. I appreciate the help!

I would skip the Leith cages. Altho they are really, really nice… they are pricey… and I think you could get better bang for your buck if you got an xpen or built your own rabbit condo using NIC grids and other materials. Plus, if you built your own, you’d have more options for expansion or easily replacing pieces and parts later on down the line.

i’ve the nic grids as an extesion to the cage i already have, but luna chewed through a lot of the zip ties. is there a way to prevent this?

hmm…maybe u can attach them with some sort of bendy wire? i would def try to do a nic cage. way cheaper!

I agree, looks nice but they’re pricey. I probably spent $100 just on the nic cubes on my condo and it takes up 1/2 of our office. I’d recommend the NIC cubes for sure, plus you can build it anyway you want (just make sure you buy lots of zip ties).

Zipties can be replaced easily, so that’s good. Do the larger size of ziptie. We bought the multi-pack before that had teeny tiny spaghetti noodle size ties and they were worthless. The bigger sizes you can get at a hardware store.

Or again, an xpen. They have metal connectors and cannot be bitten thru.

I use both ex-pens and NIC cubes at my house – the advantage to the NIC cubes being that you can build multiple levels. That could definitely be a big problem though if they are chewing through the zip ties – were they the really big zip ties like Beka was talking about? My bunnies have not ever chewed their zip ties before, thats a pretty smart bunny to figure that out The good thing about expens is that they can be shaped different ways, and are very move-able and can be shaped to fit different areas.

That being said, I know the Leithpetwerks cages are pricey, but I do have several friends that have them and are very happy with them. They do very good workmanship. I’ve looked into buying one before, we couldn’t afford it but we did really like the style. As far as buying the amenities that go with them, the urine guard is really only necessary if your bunny tends to pee over the corner of the litter box. Chew guards could probably be a good idea though…my bunnies chew pretty much anything and if I was going to spend a good amount on a cage I’d probably want to protect it a little bit.

You can use wire instead of Zipties but it is harder to get the wire as tight as needed. I use the large Zipties Beka mentioned and mine chewed them a lot in the beginning but now they tend to just bite off the long ends of them that are sticking up. I double up the Zipties with very bendy wire that I twist tight with pliers just to be safe.
