I bought two bunnies the other day and I am not sure if they are eating their pellets or drinking out of their water bottle. They are eating timothy hay tho. What is up with this? Thanks.

Welcome! How old are the two bunnies? Did you buy the same brand and kind of pellets that the bunnies had been used to eating in their previous environment? If your pellets are a kind that’s new to them, it may take a while for them to get used to the new feed. That’s great that they are eating timothy hay, that should be made available to them in unlimited quantities. If the bunnies are from 6 weeks old to 7 mos. old, alfalfa would be good for them also. How much of the pellets are you giving them each day?

You might want to give your bunnies a plain old bowl of clean fresh water that you change frequently, that they can easily drink out of. A heavy one made of ceramic will keep from tipping over. That may encourage them to drink. If your bunnies are 5 mos. or older, you can give them red leaf, green leaf, and romaine lettuce that has been rinsed well and they can get some water that way too. Don’t give them iceberg lettuce though. Well rinsed cilantro & italian parsley are also good veggies that can be given gradually if the bunnies are 5 mos. or older.

              Welcome Zacksaw!

Lashkay asked some very important questions that will help us answer your question, and I also have a couple more questions to add. You said you are not sure if they are eating their pellets? Are they on unlimited pellets right now or why is it that you can’t notice if they are eating their pellets. (I’m just somehow misunderstanding that aspect of it)

NOTE: IF they are babies, it is very important to change their diet gradually,(so gradually changing from the pellet they are used to the a new pellet if you are using a different one).

Are they pooping?  IF they are not pooping and have stopped eating for 12 hours or more, please call a vet asap!

They are spilling some of their food thats why I am not sure how much they are eating. I also gave them some alfalfa cubes they are eating those very very good!!!

                  Welcome!

Great! The important diet peice is hay Often they prefer a bowl so you might look into those instead of a bottle. Make sure it either attaches to the cage or is very heavy-a favorite game to almost all bunnies is ‘throw the crock of water’

I also want to suggest you get them to the vet for an exam asap and book their spay/neuters. A GREAT deal of rabbit owners find out their two girls or two boys are actually one of each when they find babies one morning. Rabbits are prolific breeders and start young-so depending on age you likely need to get at least one ‘fixed’ strait away
