New Bun

So as some know I picked up a stary french lop rom the shelter yesterday. Wasn;t planned I saw him and had to go in there he is justso BEAUTIFUL!

Anyays yesterday when I first brought him home I had him in my sons room nuntil he went to bed for the night I then moved him into the hall way. This way it is quiet enough to settle a bit but also there is me or my other half walkin by the cage and sayin hello etc. He doesnt move much just lays in the cage I think the cage is a little smal at the moment and will be moving him into a bigger cage eventually. But for the moment he doesnt seem to weirded out as he was in a simallar cage at the shelter.

Today in the afternoon me and him ventured into the bathroom to spend some time together bonding and out of cage time. I toop the top off for him to come out and he could of cared less. He stood on hind legs for a bit then just stood there watching me. I offered fresh veggies (nota big fan could of cared less) SO after 30 minutes of me in the bathroom with him I put a baby gate up and left him in there for 2.5 to 3 hours or so and he never moved from the cage just layed down.

Tommorow I plan on doing the same is there anything I could do for him. Because the cage is not HUGE I want him to be able to be in the bathroom or as long as e wishes but I am worried about the poor uy he just doesnt seem to care.

Any tips on how to encourage him etc or if I am doing the right stuff then YAY!! I just want the little guy to have the best he can have

well he likely is a bit spooked, since many shelter bunnies are not handled enough. also, if the shelter never gave him out time he may not know what to make of it. i’d recommend laying on the floor with him. get him some toys – even an empty paper towel roll is good and encourage him to play. Talk to him a lot and let him know he’s home and you’re happy he’s there. i am betting within a few weeks with this kind of bonding time he’ll be much more active and social.

SO should I physically take him out of the cage myself, I was under the assumption to wait for him to come out. Just wondering.

Hi! I would wait a couple days before taking him out of the cage. Just to let him get familiar with whats going on. Its so sad to think that a bunny was so mistreated that he does not even know what out time is imagine when he does his first binky, he won’t know what hit him! When I deliver bunnies to adopters, usually the bunnies are very freaked out for a day or two, and often will not move from the corner of their cage. I had a bunny that was very mistreated, and covered in pee when I first got him from other boys at the shelter beating him up. He was so scared he actually sat in the corner of his cage for two DAYS before he would move, he just moved to get in the litter box and then went right back to the corner. He even peed in the corner and sat in it because he was so scared he’s now a fave bunny of mine! But I just let him be for a couple days, and then started petting him while he was in his cage, and then slowly he started to learn how to play. It was about 4 days before he started running around the apartment!

Just little steps at a time … let him come out of his cage when he is ready. Maybe leave the door open for him.

Thats what i did because the cage is the one that opens from the top I just take te top off so her has the bottom and he can do as he feels. He is not drinking much, but is eatting veggies more so when we are all sleeping, and still poopin and peeing up a storm so should I not be worried as he is popping and peeing?

Today is cage cleaning time and I think I am actually going out to buy him a bigger cage poor guy

Its so good he’s pooping and peeing, that is a very good sign that at least food is still moving through his system, and that he is not so scared that he isn’t eating! He might also be doing more pooping and peeing outside of the litter box area due to him trying to mark his new area, and also just due to him getting adjusted to the area!

Oh, and I also wanted to mention – maybe you could groom him with a nice soft brush? I’m sure a neglected bunny would definitely enjoy a nice groom, and its a good way to start bonding with him. I use a rubber brush (that I bought in the cat aisle at a pet store) so that it is gentle on my bunnies fur. Its a nice way to make sure all the loose fur gets off of their coat too so they don’t eat too much fur when they are grooming themselves.

I think you should let the bun come out on her/his own.  I was initially freaked out w/ Jessi b/c she wouldn’t leave her cage.  I thought….how could you want to stay in your cage?  Now she roams freely and contentedly. 

It must be so disconcerting for that little bun to have gone from living in a cage to having a home.  He just needs some time to get adjusted.  I highly recommend reading to him while he’s in his cage.
