› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › New Arrival this week !
Hello everybunny :o)
There’s a breeder near me that has a 6 mo. old Angora boy she needs to find a good home for. He is tattooed and comes with a pedigree. I couldn’t believe that someone that close to us had these types of bunns as I was under the impression they are pretty rare.
Anyway, the reason she wants to find him a new home is because her son wants to stick with only two breeds of rabbits; Lionheads & Jersey Woolies.
She is letting him go for $25.00 and I couldn’t resist, so my question is where is the best place to find out how to groom him…….maybe with pictures, making it easier to follow ?
We’re picking this little guy up this week sometime and I’m going to try and see if I can get the lady to show me how she grooms him as she does it every day and told me she bathes all her bunns before taking them to shows ! She said they LOVE it, especially when she blows their fur dry with a blow dryer, LOL !
I don’t know if she’ll be able to take the time to show me how she does these things, so I wanted some kind of a backup so that I can be ahead of the game :o))
I asked her if she had any pictures of him and she went and took one before she was able to get their grooming in for the day, so he looks like he still has “bed hair” in this pic, LOL !
Oh, btw…….his name is “Frosty” ;o)
I told her it would’ve been nice if he could’ve turned around and ‘smiled’ for the camera, hehehe
I’ll find out more about him as the week progresses. We’re getting our income tax refund this week (most likely Friday) and I’m going to get some of those Whitmor cubes (similar to the NIC’s) from Walmart and have them shipped to our store (free shipping to your local Walmart store w/the “site to store” option), so we can make some neat condos for our bunns :o))
Tami
Congratulations on getting an Angora! I have my Henri and they are a lot of work but they are also sweethearts. Do you know what kind of Angora he is? Henri’s an English so he has long fur everywhere and definately has to be brushed everyday. The French aren’t supposed to be quite as bad when it comes to grooming.
Something you are going to have to think about it is what kind of litter to use. As long as you use some type of pelleted litter you should be fine but all of the lighter litters tend to get stuck in the angora fluff.
As far as best grooming methods, I’ve found a small rake (the kind you would use for long haired dogs or cats) works well to groom the undercoat and actually a comb (any kind really, but the ones with the rotating tines don’t get caught in the hair as much) will do wonders to get any leftover hay out of the coat. I can get some pictures of me grooming Henri if you think that would help.
Angoragrl has an Angora. i don’t really know how she does the grooming. generally it’s not suggested that you bathe bunnies b/c they’re very susceptible to drafts. she bathes them b/c they go to shows, but i wouldn’t do it just having them around the house. it might be necessary if they get very dirty for some odd reason… but being an indoor bunny, regular brushing and keeping their space clean should be enough. they’ll do the rest. with the longer fur you’re going to want to get some papaya tablets if you don’t have them already because they’re thought to help with fur getting blocked up. plus they make a yummy treat. all of your buns would appreciate them i’m sure! is he neutered yet?
Oh yeah good call on the papaya Beka! I can’t believe I forgot that. I buy the papaya from petsmart, not the tablets though, just dehydrated papaya with no sugar added. For some reason Henri won’t eat the tablets but he loves the real thing!
[script removed]That’s the kind of rake I have. I actually have this one and a smaller one, this one is double sided, the crinkly side you only use if he actually gets matts, it will help to seperate them so that you can cut them out.
Thanks for the replies girls :o)
Frosty is an English Angora, so he has fur all over. I bought one of those slicker brushes when we got our Lionhead, Mopsey. I mentioned this to Jenn (the lady we’re getting Frosty from) and she said that would be fine to use, but I might just go ahead and buy one like you have there, Angoragrl !
As far as litter goes, we use wood pellets & Yesterdays News for our other bunns. We have hay balls that hang by a chain to put our bunns’ hay in so they’re not laying in it, as Jenn said it would be best to keep Frosty’s hay up and out of the way since it will get tangled up in his fur.
No, he’s not neutered since he was used for breeding and showing, so we are going to take care of that shortly. Probably the same time we take our Netherland Dwarf girl, Bally, in for her snips towards the end of this month (Feb.).
I was told Frosty is a real sweetheart and very friendly, so we are looking forward to having him in our lives :o))
Pics of you grooming Henri would be great, Angoragrl, if it’s not too much trouble ? I was hoping Jenn would have the time to show me, but she’ll probably just want to meet me in town instead of having me drive to her place :o( Thanks so much for offering !
Papaya tablets…….I will write that down on my bunny list of things to get while at the pet store (I love shopping for my babies !). I didn’t know they had the extra added bonus of helping with fur blockage, not to mention being a yummy treat ! Very interesting ! I love it when I can learn something new everyday, especially when it concerns my “kids” :oD
Thanks so much to you both for the great advice ! I really appreciate it :o))
Tami
one other thing.
pics please.
Many years ago when we lived in Davis Calif, we had a friend (male about 20 years old), who had about 5 angora buns. He not only gathered all their combed hair, but spun it into yarn and knit himself a gorgeous sweater!! It was the most amazing sweater, you just couldn’t stop petting it ……. ok, maybe that was his plan all along He really loved his buns, and we nicknamed him “Bunnyman”. lol!
It is going to be so exciting to have another English Angora on the site!! We will definately need pictures! What color is your new baby?
Yes, it will be, Angoragrl :o))
He is a REW. The only pic I have of him right now is in my initial post, with his “bed hair”, LOL ;o)
Wow, what a great story, skwerlybuns ! I don’t know how to knit. I wish I would’ve paid more attention to my mother when I was growing up. She knew how to knit AND crochet. She doesn’t do it anymore, though :o(
That’s so interesting to hear of a man spinning & knitting, though ! That would be so neat to be able to find someone around here that could do that ! I mean there’s going to be hair in the brushes and combs after grooming, so why not put it to good use, huh ?
That would be a great hobby to have ! And to buy anything Angora is very expensive, so how great would that be ?
I just might have to look into that
tami1962, you might want to look into actually selling the bunny hair, contact specialty yarn stores they may have customers that can spin the yarn and want to buy bulk angora hair!
Yes, it will be, Angoragrl :o))
He is a REW. The only pic I have of him right now is in my initial post, with his “bed hair”, LOL ;o)
I can’t see the picture in the initial post. . . Do you have it on photobucket or another photo site? I’m not sure how you tried to put it in your post, but the easiest way is to use a picture from a site like that and then hit the “insert/edit image” button (looks like a mountain) and copy the URL into the box that comes up.
Here’s my baby
He’s a REW too!
“REW”?
i feel kinda dumb asking… but is that red-eyed white?
“REW”?
i feel kinda dumb asking… but is that red-eyed white?
Lol! Don’t worry I had to ask that at first too. Yep, you got it right on the money. REW=red eyed white.
These are truly amazing animals. We had one in The Rabbit Haven that got adopted last year, she looked like a stuffed animal, not real. Here is a thread I did about her, including a video. He name is Cassia.

OMG!!! It’s another Henri bunny! She is beautiful! I hope the people that adopted her were ready for a high maintenance bunny!
OMG, Angoragrl ! I just love that Henri bunny of yours to death ! He is sooooo beautiful !
I had no idea my picture can’t be seen because I see it, LOL ! I just copied it from the email Jennifer sent me and pasted it in my message. I totally had a senior moment and then tried to copy it onto my desktop like that after you said you couldn’t see it (it did come as an attachment, but I just hadn’t saved it yet) and now my desktop icons are all messed up The wording underneath the stuff I have saved on my desktop (My Documents, My Computer, etc.) all have a white square around them now and I don’t know how to fix it because you can’t see the picture I have on my desktop because of it now *sigh* I can’t believe I had such a MAJOR senior moment !! My desktop looks hideous !!
Anyway, here is a picture of Frosty with his “bed hair”. As I said in my first post, this was taken before Jenn had gotten around to grooming him that day. He just looks like one big ball of fluff, doesn’t he ? LOL !
He is gourgeous though! You should see Henri sometimes! Frosty’s ears look like they are fluffier then Henri’s too. I LOVE angoras! They are certainly unique.
aww, welcome Frosty – he does look like a big fluffy snowball 🙂
that flooring has me a bit concerned, since wire isn’t good for lil bunny feet. I’m not sure if that’s his house – but if it is – you can add some maize or seagrass mats or some inexpensive rag rugs.
Hi gravehearted !
That pic of Frosty is from the lady who is selling him. She breeds and shows them & I guess most people that do that, house their bunns outdoors in hutches with these types of floors :o( I’m not sure if that’s part of his cage, though. She might’ve just set him there to take the picture because she said she had just taken it right before she sent it to me and hadn’t gotten around to grooming everybunny yet
He will definitely have better living arrangements here ! First of all, he won’t be outside & second, hubby & I are going to construct a rabbitat with NIC type cubes (the Whitmor brand from Walmart) as soon as our income tax gets here. We’re expecting that on Friday and I can’t wait !!!
Most likely we’ll be picking Frosty up on Friday as well ;o)
Gee, it feels like Christmas around here all over again, LOL !!!
Graveh – that looks like the top of the cage he’s resting on.
And Frosty isn’t a bun – he’s a tribble!
Tami – I’m very glad to hear that pic isn’t from your house. It looked like a top of a cage from the pic, but you never can tell.
Ooo you’re going to love having an NIC condo and I’m sure Frosty will too.
BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA, markusdark !!!
I remember that Star Trek episode “The Trouble With Tribbles” and that’s exactly what I told hubby he looked like when Jennifer first sent me that pic of Frosty, LMAO ! (omg…….I think I just dated myself )
Neato!! Two angoras!! Congrats Tami!!
O.K. I just dated myself too because I know what a tribble is and I also remember that episode. UGH. Adorable angoras!
OMG! I didn’t know what a Tribble was so I had to look it up but you guys are right, they do look like angoras!
I don’t know what tribbles are either. What are they?
I found this on YouTube – shows how to groom Angoras (it’s part one of a six part series. http://youtube.com/watch?v=-Ccl9bs0UzI&feature=related
NOTE: I am not an Angora grooming expert, so I won’t be to able to tell you if someone is grooming incorrectly or not, and I have only seen part one. The blowdryer thing doesn’t look like it’s being used to dry as much as to fluff to make it easier to groom, but I’m not sure how often you would actually need to do it. I posted it because the grooming portion looks helpful. EDITED: I noticed a section about the type of blow dryers – looks like they don’t use regular household dryers (that’s good to know) looks like it’s more of just an air flow tool without the heat.
HERE is another link about how to care for long-haired breeds that I found interesting http://www.ontariorabbits.org/diet/careinfo7.html
aww so cute just one giant fluff ball!
First of all I want to thank everybunny for all the wonderful comments about Frosty :o))
And Binky, thanks a million for that YouTube link for Angora grooming ! It’s fascinating ! I can’t seem to locate Part 4, though…..hmmmm *scratching chin*
In Part 3 she is showing “Combings” versus “Prime Wool”. She said the Combings aren’t as valuable as the Prime Wool, but I was just wondering………Angoragrl, maybe you know……..how do you know when the wool is ready to come out ? This lady doing the vids says you just pull on it and it comes out on its own, not hurting the rabbit because it’s just ready to come out and the follicle will just allow the wool to be released, but I don’t want to pull if it’s not ready……..
When you groom Henri, do you keep any of his fur and do you know the difference between the Prime Wool and the Combings ? Well, DUH ! The Combings are pretty obvious, aren’t they ? They come from the comb *slaps forhead*
I find all this really fascinating and what’s really cool, is there are other videos linked to the Angora groomings that let you see the wool being spun, how they do it and I think I even saw one where they’re making something with it (a sweater maybe ? I just caught a quick glimpse, but will check it out in more depth, later).
So anyway, I have to tell ya……….we went and got Frosty last evening !!!! LOL ! It was a helluva drive, though, even though we don’t live that far away, but it was just pouring down rain, plus being it was night already, it was hellish trying to see the road because Jenn lives in the boonies, LOL ! We had to drive really slow not only because of the weather, but because we hadn’t been out that way for ages and didn’t exactly know where she lived, so we had to look for the “Jersey Woolies for Sale” sign *sigh*. What a trip !!
It finally stopped raining when we got in her vicinity, which was great because that allowed us to be able to get Frosty in the vehicle without him getting all wet. I just brought a big towel with us and he sat on my lap on the ride home :o)) I’m tellin’ ya……..those ears !! Hubby had a hard time focusing on the road because he kept wanting to look over at him since he had his ears up the whole way home, LOL ! It started pouring down rain again right before we got home, so by the time we got to our house, we were literally exhausted from all the stress !
Not Frosty, though ! haha When we got in the house, hubby Doug, took him over to meet Sid and they sniffed each other through the cage bars & then of course my two dogs Kozmo (Yorkie) & Kazee (Shih-tzu/Pekingese) had to come over and sniff and were very interested to see what kind of “presents” this character was going to leave them ! LMAO !
Frosty didn’t waste any time going around investigating. He had a little trouble getting traction on the floor since we don’t have any carpet in the house, but he finally got the hang of it. I had to apologize to him because I told him that I knew the investigations here in his new home probably wouldn’t compare with the one he had the night before outside with the mud puddles, burrs & Alfalfa hay (& possibly a few wild promiscuous females !).
I can’t wait to get into the grooming routine with this guy ! He really is so gentle and loves to be petted and made over, so we are very pleased :o))
I need to get fresh batteries for my camera so I can take some pictures for you to see. That will absolutely, definitely be today !!! His feet are barren of fluff because of the mess he got into the night before, so he looks a little strange when he’s trying to hop around the house, but I’m sure it was well worth it to him because of the fun he had out carousing, LOL !
Thanks again for all the great postings ! I just love this forum :o))
PS: Could someone please send me a pic of the Papaya Tablets, container it comes in, brand name or whatever other Papaya product you use for your bunns ? I’d really appreciate it because we ended up going to a local pet store instead of Petco (35 mi. away) and they didn’t have much of a selection of rabbit stuff & of course I couldn’t find any Papaya. We then went to our local Tractor Supply Co. and again, couldn’t find anything Papaya, so I have no idea what I’m looking for :o( Thanks so much for your help ! Oh ! And all I could find at either store was Alfalfa Cubes, no Timothy Cubes, so we ended up getting the Alfa-cubes for the time being. Jenn told me that’s what she gave him so it didn’t get tangled up in his fur, but I didn’t think Alfalfa was the best thing to give adult rabbits ? Also, Sid is not eating his Timothy hay, regardless if I give it to him by hand or if it’s hanging in his hay ball/vegetable basket :o( Another non-hay eating bunn on the list it looks like :*o( I’m going to order some of BB’s Bunny Blend hay tomorrow, income tax payday (YIPEE !) and see if that will get him eating it again…….
what a car trip! i’m glad everyone was safe. you’re in PA so you probably had the same *crappy* weather we did yesterday… lol.
Binky Bunny sells the papaya tablets, so you could maybe get some when you order the hay tomorrow. they’re made by Oxbow. if you look at the top under shop, you’ll see them there.
i think it’s okay for angoras to have some limited alfalfa b/c they need the extra calories for their fur. i heard that somewhere… possibly on here.
i would try to still feed regular hay. i think regular hay is better as far as fiber. is this right? or am i imagining things again? you’re going to be grooming everyday… and no offense to the breeder, but you are going to be much more attentive to his needs than i’m sure she was. if you see some hay stuck, you’ll be right there helping him out.
Yes, Beka…..what a car trip indeed, LOL ! Isn’t this weather crazy ??? Last night when we went to pick up Frosty, I didn’t even wear a jacket because I was so stinkin’ hot, so I just wore my t-shirt ! How messed up is that ?? In February !! Now today the wind is blowin’, sounding like a tornado passing through about every 5 or 10 mins. and getting chilly out now *sigh* I just don’t know how to dress anymore !
Thanks so much for the Papaya info ! I couldn’t wait until tomorrow so I just placed an order with BB and got some of those tablets, 1 New Orchard mini bale, 2 Oxbow hay cakes for Frosty & 1 Oat bale. I didn’t get Timothy because it seems like my bunns aren’t eating very much of it. Maybe because we’ve been getting it from Tractor Supply and it’s not fresh or something ? I haven’t a clue, but I need to get them eating hay & the Orchard and Oat bales sounded pretty tasty (at least they did if I were a rabbit). I just hope they like it…….
My little Netherland Dwarf, Bally, seems to be the only one eating the Timothy hay :o(( Now I’m going to be impatient til it arrives, LOL, just like a kid at Christmas
Binky,
Tribbles are little balls of fur that first appeared in a classic Trek episode, “The Trouble with Tribbles.” They are about the diameter of an open hand and a bit ovoid in shape. They are each born pregnant. They emit a cooing sound that is soothing to almost all humanoid species, but they can’t stand Klingons.
And yes, I’m a dork.
Alex
Sigh. I remember The Trouble with Tribbles when it was on for the first time!!! Only saw it in about 2000 more reruns after that…Your bunny is a tribble with ears. (Or three smaller tribbles.) Not a bad name for a bunny, actually.
My nephew said, when giving me bunny, “you can name him anything you want, but I’m calling him Spock.” My brother put his finger between Spockie’s ears, making a perfect V, and said “Live long and prosper.”
Other nephew, not to be outdone, said “I’m calling him J. S. Spock.” Thus Johann Sebastian Spock arrived, and answered to the name JS Spock that night. He ran right over when we called him. The logical thing to do.
Angoras are fabulous. The boyfriend absolutely LOVES Henri & giggles everytime i show him pics. lol
n____n There better be lots of pictures. I’m so excited to have two angora boys to squeal over now! XD
HEHE …. he’s cute as!
Dawn xx

So cute!!! Why is it that some look like the first one and then some look like the second one? I love the first ones look. The second one is cute too, but my goodness..the poor baby cant even see.
