So I had made a previous post about my little Holland Lop having some dietary issues and received some great advice! I changed out his hay from timothy to alfalfa and he definitely prefers the alfalfa!

Now Hotwheels (the bun) is about 9 weeks old now and he has a litter box in his pen. He uses it, but it isn’t consistent. I’ve been told and know that once he’s neutered, litter training will be a lot easier. He doesn’t urinate in one place. It’s all over the pen, and also in the box, but again not consistent.

Even while he’s a baby bun, I’d like to instill good litter habits. What are some tips and tricks?

Also, when is a good age to neuter. I haven’t seen any descended testes and I figure he’s obviously too young, but when should I start looking into that?

As you know already, it’s the neutering that will really solidify the litter habits so there are bound to be accidents until then. But, you can try and soak up some of the urine from the floor and put it in his box so he will smell it there and be more apt to use it. Also try to place the litter box in different areas where he is urinating or add a second box so there is more of a chance of him using it. If he begins to favor a spot, going there a lot, that is where the box should be.

Nine weeks is still super young (was he recently weaned from the mother?) so it may take some time before he catches on. Most male rabbits mature around 6 months of age but it can vary. It may be worth making a vet visit around 4-5 months to see if he is ready. It may also be worth double-checking the sex with the vet to be sure you’re dealing with a neuter and not a spay.
