Hello, I recently got two Netherland Dwarf’s…they are eight weeks old and only 2 days apart.  They are in separate cages right now but right next to one another.  I tried to put them together but all he wants to do is “make babies”  I’m planning to have him neutered in a couple of months (or whenever the vet tells me its ok).  I’m wondering if I need to get her spayed as well since I’ve heard the surgery is much more dangerous for the girl.  Any advice will be appreciated!! Thank you!!

defiantly spay the girl. they have a 80% chance of getting cancer by the age of two if not spayed. they can also become aggressive once they are about 6 months old. most vets like to wait until they are 5-6 months before spaying and neutering.

Agreed. Spayign is beneficial for the girls, for both health and your sanity Female buns can get quite aggressive and territorial, spaying helps. And the benefits definitely outweigh the cons. Both my girls made it through the surgery just fine

I would spueter them both. It’ll be an easier bond, better litterbox habits, and as the others have mentioned, less chance of cancer.

The surgery is more invasive than a neuter, but with an experienced vet who does the procedure often, there should be very little risk. Like Mocha said, you have a long time until she can be spayed (wait until she’s 6 months), so that allows you enough time to have your boy neutered and evaluate whether or not you feel confident with the vet who does his neuter. You may want to keep looking if you’re not.

I would not recommend putting them together until both are altered. Females can actually be much more aggressive and territorial than males, so even if he is neutered and no babies can result, one or both of them are still at risk for bad injuries sustained during fighting. They both should be fixed and allowed to heal for a full month before being reintroduced.
