My 5-year-old bun, Honey, hasn’t seen a bunny in 3 years. Now that I’m older and I’ve got more experience, money, and time, I want to get him a friend. The only problem? Honey isn’t neutered. I bought him from a local petting zoo, and they didn’t alter any of the animals there. I didn’t realize it was so important to get a rabbit spayed/neutered till a few weeks ago, and I’m not sure what to do. I read 5-6+ is when rabbits are too old to be altered, but I also read that they must be altered to be housed with another rabbit, even if they are the same gender. I don’t know if I need to get Honey neutered or just see if he’ll get along fine with another rabbit without surgery. I haven’t been able to find anything answering my question.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Yes, to bond, rabbits need to be spayed/neutered. He may not act hormonal around you, but smelling another bun in his territory could set off his hormonal instincts. Talk to your vet about neutering. Make sure to get blood work done to ensure that his body can handle the anesthesia correctly

Thanks! He’ll go to the vet maybe end of May or beginning of June and I’ll get his blood checked. I really hope he isn’t too old to get it done!
