I want to get Romeo neutered at the spca. I was wondering if anyone had gotten there bun fixed there and weather or not it is a good decision to have him neutered there.

        thanks

Well, SPCA’s vary across the country so it’s honestly hard to say if the one in your particular area is a good decision or not.

You can certainly talk with them and ask them about the amount of rabbit neuters they do per year. Our new Bun, Jackson, was neutered at the Montreal SPCA. They Only do boys there, they send the girls to the exotics that I use as our regular vet, as Spay’s are so much trickier.

All rabbits MUST be spayed or neutered before they leave the Montreal SPCA ( finally!) which is a New rule for them. I am more than happy to pay the extra fee for the adoption to have had Jackson neutered there.

Jackson is having a post neuter check up in 2 weeks at our regular Exotics vet. I am checking his sutures every day and he is recovering a billion times faster than Coco did from her spay.

I would recommend going to the SPCA to talk to them, or giving them a call to talk to them before you bring your bunny there for surgery. As Sarita said, it really can vary from one SPCA to another. Also, is there a local rabbit rescue you can call to ask if they have had their bunnies neutered/spayed at the SPCA? They should be able to tell you if it is a good place to go or not. Ask them questions about how they perform the spay and what they do. An easy way to spot a not so good place is if they tell you to fast the bunny, dogs and cats can’t eat before a surgery, but bunnies should always be provided food right up until they go into surgery. Give them a break though if it is just the receptionist that says that because sometimes they get confused, but the vet should always know that a bunny should not be fasted before a surgery.
