Horton is getting neutered next week!~ && I am very nervous about it…

Anything important I should know? Also, is there any post-op care?

Post op – he will most likely be rearing and ready to go – that’s been my experience with male after a neuter.

I would keep him confined and limit his activity though for the next few days. Most neuters don’t necessarily require pain meds – if your vet gives them that’s great, but unlike a spay, they seem to just come home ready to eat.

I would take a bag of hay with you to the vet for them to give him after the neuter.

No need to fast Horton either the night before – they should not be fasted like dogs and cats, just feed him as usual.

Let us know how his neuter goes.

poor Horton…neuter time…where do you take him, to get the neuter done? I see, you’re in GA, too. where is Alpharetta?

                for the neuter:

don’t starve Horton. Bunnies need to constantly eat, and they can’t throw up. feed and water as usual. you might want to bring his favorite treat/food when you bring him in for the surgery. they will want to make him eat right away, after the surgery. also, when you drop him off [why does that sound like dry cleaning…] tell them the specifics on him, like, if he hates being picked up. I would put a nice blankie or towel in his carrier, something that has your smell on it. a carrier that opens from the side and top is a good idea.

after the surgery, you just need to watch him for any infections, swelling, discharge on the surgery site. they might give you pain meds and/or antibiotics. he might be mad at you for a few days……a neuter is a lot more easier than a spay, tho…

I hope, everything will go well!!

                ((((((GOOD LUCK))))))

                   Thanks for the info.

Dr. Lafferty is doing the neuter… he is the only vet close to me that does rabbits. I like him alot and have alot of confidence in him.

They did tell me not to feed him after 6 PM the night before… from what everyone here is saying, that isn’t necessary.

Alpharetta is about 20 miles north of Atlanta. Where are you?

yikes. yeah, you never ever fast a rabbit. you might want to call the vet back and speak to him directly and get his confirmation on this. oftentimes receptionists will say that b/c it’s true for cats and dogs so they just assume. rabbit cannot vomit so there is no worry of that under anesthesia, and it is dangerous for them to go without food for an extended length of time. i would actually feed him earlier in the morning than usual that way he’ll have enough time to eat before you leave. boys bounce back quicker, but jsut in case it’s good for ihm to have a full meal beforehand. for afterwards, make sure to have some of his favorite veggies, maybe a special mix of hay, anything (healthy) that will entice him to eat.

Yes, often time the receptionists give the wrong information.

I would mention this to the vet so that he knows what his staff is saying so he can train or retrain them if necessary.

You know the right thing is to NOT fast them but others may not.

I love my vet, but her receptionist is the same way, for my 2 neuters I had a big sign taped to the side of the carrier that said DO NOT FAST THIS RABBIT BEFORE OR AFTER SURGERY, PLEASE MAKE SURE HE HAS FOOD AND WATER AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES

She looked at me funny, but when I called and checked on him later they made a point of saying that he had his bowls in the kennel with him.

here’s wishes for Horton’s quick recovery!

I have heard some practices say this…but it is mostly a receptionists miss information.  I believe that I was told that at my practice by one of the receptionist b/f Leo’s first tooth surgery and I corrected her by saying…”he’s a rabbit!”  and she apologized and said that she just gets into this pre-op instructions rut after giving out so much dog/ cat instructions.  Do let the vet know that the receptionist got it wrong.  She might be new and hasn’t learned that it’s different w/ rabbits.

                              So Horton got lucky…

During the pre-op exam, the vet found that Horton is not “sexually mature” yet!

He is 5 months old, at least!

Will I be able to SEE when he is? They said to bring him back in a month???

Hahaha poor Horton, he must be suffering from a bit of an ego bruise right now I am not sure how you tell when they are sexually mature… I would imagine that he would be soon though!

huh… late bloomer i guess. you can sometimes see the testicles (they TYPICALLY drop at about 3-4 months) but buns can actually suck them up so they are not visible. yeah, i’d pay attention to him and then bring him back in a month. he hasn’t been having any “bad bunny puberty” behavior yet?

I had 2 vets telling me the same thing about Pringles for months, that he was too young and they hadn’t dropped yet. When I finally got him into a real rabbit savvy vet, she told me I could watch his bottom forever, but that Pringles was a GIRL and I would NEVER see ‘them’ drop…..lol. That’s embarrassing to take one in for a neuter and get THAT phone call…..lol

Hmmm….did the vet actually check him or just turn him over to see if his testicles “had dropped”…many times males will suck in their testicles too or there could be other conditions with their testicles.

We’ve had a few at the sanctuary who had encapsulated testicles that never dropped and the vet actually sexed them (we just looked for testicles because they were of the age when the testicles should be descended) so…their neuter was much more involved then a regular neuter too.

Kral:  I love that story!  I think you shared it b/f, else I have some type of telepathic connection w/ your mind.

My vet told me a similar testicle story about a male bunny that came in.  It took all 3 small mammal vets at the practice to locate his testes.  They knew they were there b/c they were able to express (is that the right word) his penis.  It was Vet #2 that had suggested poking around for that after not locating his testes.  She decribes him as a “very shy little man”.  I thought that was a brilliant description.  I can definately see Leo’s bulges, they look like 2 deflated balloons on his belly (hope that sounds alright).

Leo goes in for neuter attempt 3 or maybe it’s 4 on July 1st!  I will be happy to give you some suggestions or feedback once it’s finally done.  Little Jessica has been very adament that Leo get fixed ASAP this past week & a half…he’s been a very eager beaver lately.

I’m sure I did when I first found this site, because that’s when I found out that a vet’s not a vet’s not a vet when it comes to rabbits. The first vet was the one I’d used for 25 years for my dogs, cats and horse. He checked Pringles several times, turning her over, really groping around (poor bunny) On the 3rd visit he turned around and asked ME if I knew where rabbits kept them!

I just kinda didn’t go back to him with any buns, the second advertised himself as an ‘exotic’ vet, with rabbit experience, but he too felt up my poor Pringles on 2 visits and charged me $55 each time.

By then I found Dr. Luann who flipped her over, took a quick look and gave me the news that Pringles was a girl. Since both the earlier vets had finally admitted they did ‘do’ too many rabbits, I just never called them back.
