Neutered Yesterday, On Track?

 So I took Theodore in to get neutered yesterday because of the mama/kits I’m now fostering. Anyway the breeder had someone she has do neuters for her so I took him there and picked him up today about 24 hours after the surgery was complete. When I picked him up she said he was a little jumpy and he didn’t seem tired at all. She showed me his incisions and they just looked like little flaps of skin. No redness or swelling.

I think he was happy to see me and be back home because he wasn’t jumpy at ALL when I had to get him out of the travel cage. He just sat still and let me lift him up and into his cage . I think it’s probably because the breeder has a 2 year old who torments every animal in the house. He even tried to scruff Theo when I was there! Needless to say I rescued my baby from him .

As of tonight he’s eaten a handful of veggies and whatever the breeder provided for him last night. He’s currently resting in his cage without much interaction so he has a chance to heal. 

Does everything sound on track? What should I expect in the next two weeks? What’s the easiest way to check incision sites without causing damage?

Hold a treat up so he has to stand up to check the incision. And yep all sounds on track. Just keep him from jumping while he heals, eating already is great.

It’s a good sign that he’s eating food. For the next couple days I would keep him in his cage, but after that it is okay to let him out, just make sure he doesn’t jump onto things for a week or so. Boys usually heal faster than girls. Someone here on BB is a genius (I forget who), the best way to check the incisions is to place a mirror on the ground and have your bun stand up with a treat. If he’s an easy guy to pick up and won’t struggle in your arms you can also hold his back end and behind his front legs and lift him up a little to take a peek at his belly. I would not suggest flipping him over though, that could cause damage.

He might be a little irritable in the next few days but it’s not as common with boys.

Sound like things are going well! Just remember he still has viable sperm for at least two weeks, so keep him away from momma and babies. Probably for at least a month really… Stranger things have happened!

Sounds good! If he’s eating normally, resting, and moving around a bit (but hopefully not too much, for the incision) then it looks like he’s on the right track to recovery .

Hooray! Lucky for me he’s a naturally lazy bunny and doesn’t move around a ton regularly, so he’s just been resting on his mat next to his food and water. I’ve heard him hop in and out of the litterbox a few times, but that’s it.

Checking the incision is going to be tricky because he doesn’t really jump up at all or stand on his back feet. I think I’ll have to sort of pick him up and have someone with a mirror so I can see without flipping him over. How often should I check it?

Take a peek once a day, you won’t have to do it for very long since they usually heal quickly.

As long as he’s eating and pooping he’s doing great.

I wasn’t able to check my bun’s incision when he stood up – he needed to be picked up and flipped over, which he hated. He was so bad about being picked up that I just checked once and let it go. As long as he’s active and eating, it’s probably fine.

Mine wouldn’t let me check his incision at all, I just tried to see it when he stood up for treats and I didn’t notice there was any red so I assumed he was fine, the vet checked them at 1 week and he was all healed up

Sounds like he’s doing well!  Eating already is a great sign.

Did they send him home with any pain meds?  That’s a nice bit of “insurance” to be sure they heal up as smoothly as possible.

No pain meds . I didn’t even get to go to the vet because the breeder took him since it’s kind of a private deal or whatever. However, he’s eaten his pellets and veggies and I looked at his incision and it still looks good.

One question, how the heck do I get him to eat hay?! He won’t eat any -_-

Zeus wouldn’t eat any hay after his neuter either.  I went and bought 3 or 4 different kinds of hay (orchard, botanical, and a different brand of timothy than he gets normally), and got some dried woven grass mats for him to nibble on too.  The orchard hay did the trick, now he’s a certified orchard hay lover.
