I noticed a lot of material in my room going missing so while doing a thorough clean I decided to look for it.

What I found was a huge nest like huge full of cardboard, material, clean socks I have been looking everywhere for, etc. and Pacey hair a lot of Pacey hair.

I thought only female rabbits made nests…. So why is my male bun making nests? I found 2 other nests one under the couch and one behind a cabinet in the hallway. It is all Pacey hair no Walter hair in sight.

Are you SURE it’s a male?  As in, was he owned by you when the neuter was done?  Or did you get him already neutered?

My neutered male rabbit Mango used to do this nesting type of behavior – I have no idea why – he hasn’t done it in awhile – that was a few years ago and he used to do it alot.  I have to think it was due to insecurity – but I can only speculate about why.

I really meant a stress reaction, not an insecurity.

Sonn neutered Pacey herself (well… you know… had a vet do it. Lol….)

Is it a coincidence that the stuff was moved and maybe Pacey just happened to be shedding at the same time?

Maybe he is protesting the fact winter is coming, and is making cozy nests for when he gets cold I know I want to! lol

I could be wrong but I don’t think it’s shed hair. It was all piled very neatly under and on top of all the shredded cardboard and stuff.
He is very much male lol you could tell at a very young age that he was all male.

Andi I would probably freak out if one of my male rabbits started lactating LOL

Only just seeing this thread. Pacey is one funny bunny! Did he drag his little straw broom in there too?

The only thing I’m thinking is it may have been to do with your moving.  Do they have access to more rooms now also?

Has this behaviour only just started do you think? I know you were bonding Pacey and Walter but can’t recall if they’re now bonded.

Some rabbits can be born with both sex organs…. just a thought.  Less likely reason – but possible.

LOL Oh his straw broom is always in the room or he will look all over the house trying to find it. His broom girlfriend *sigh*

Yes they have access to the entire house except the laundry room and bathroom at my mom’s they only had access to the back part of the house.

I am not sure how long it takes a bunny to make 3 nests so not sure when it started.

Sonn:  First time we gave Lainey & Gulliver a diggy box with shredded paper, Gulliver would gather up as much as he could fit in his mouth & move it to a corner of an empty box.  Never got the digging part but kept him busy for hours!  We haven’t done a diggy box for a couple months but plan on it especially for our new baby girl (still not re-named!) as she is a BIG TIME digger.  Funny the things you found though – for once the missing socks didn’t get eaten by the washer & dryer .

My rabbit hides his stuffed toys and my socks in the back corner of his maze. I peeked once to see what he was doing and he just seemed to be using them as punching bags lol. Maybe he does it for entertainment. Except the hair part is kind of puzzling. I also didn’t know that rabbits could be bornw ith both sex organs. Weird. lol

Pretty much any animal that reproduces sexually can be born that way. It’s just a weird thign that sometimes happens. Happens in humans too, for example.

I was just thinking about this question – do you think it just has to do with Rabbit personality? I mean, maybe he is a boy who just likes things arranged a certain “way” – I know some rabbits have a play mode which involves scrunching and smoothing a blanket or towel – Maybe this is his way of relaxing – to make little spots where he controls the space?

and Re rabbits born with both sex organs – it happens in humans far more than we know – there is a great book called “Between XX and XY” by Dr Gerald Callahan, which goes into genetics and how frequent “mistakes” occur in nature when looking at people on a genetic level.

One would have to extrapolate that if Humans DNA can get mixed and muddled, than rabbit DNA can as well.

Whoops, didn’t realise the dual sex thing would create such interest. lol. These days, in humans it’s referred to as intersex – those who are born with both gentalia or partial from each sex. I certainly don’t know the specifics on this with rabbits but a scenario might be a rabbit born with male genitals, testes descend (or not) but also might have ovaries and uterus. (Again, really not sure how it might present but ambiguous sex certainly possible.)

True. I remember Mum saying something about this. She trained as a nurse in the 60’s. She said the doctors would just decide then and there what sex the baby would be when ambiguous. Just visually. Even alter them. She felt it was so wrong and I do agree. The confusion that must have created for some people all there lives. Anyway, discussion for another day, another thread.

I know this is absolutely NO use to anyone lol but I’ve got an intersex or hermaphrodite goat lol it does happen, but my vet said it was very rare and he’d never seen it before! But it can happen in any mammalian species as you say it’s a genetic mutation. Another thing (why do I get weird animals lol) I had an entire male greyhound who if you didn’t know better would have sworn was female! I saw him on several occasions run away from beotches in heat and he rarely lifted his leg he preferred to squat! I had him checked out and there was no physical reason why he should. The vet said it was a dominance issue even though he was un neutered. Maybe he was just in touch with his feminine side hahaha Sorry I’ve been rambling and not one iota use in answering the question!

There was a story in the newspaper the other day about a neutered cat that had given birth to kittens…apparently, it was a hermafrodite, and the vet only removed the testicles but had not realised it had female parts as well. He said he had only seen in it textbooks, so of course he had never double-checked the cat.

I don’t think I would worry too much about this though. I mean, there’s got to be another reason for it. I am voting for stress as well!…but if he continues to act weird, maybe you should have him checked
