My bunny Nala met a male rabbit on boxing day, and are being kept in seperate hutches until they are both spayed/neutered and have bonded with eachother. I was cleaning out their hutches, and when I opened the door to Nala’s hutch there were mounds of hay. She tried to get out as normal, but got out alot quicker than i thought she would which was unusual as she is a very shy and timid rabbit. She ran straight behind Earl’s hutch and came out the other side where i was surprised to see them grooming and sniffing eachother. Eventuallly, she went back into her hutch and i lifted up the roof, but when i did she jumped up and tried to escape from it (which is pretty high, over a metre tall). I was pretty scared as i didnt want her to fall out onto the floor but luckily she couldnt get over and jumped back into her hutch. After, she started collecting hay in her mouth and bringing it through to her bed, i thought she might’ve just been cold so i put in alot of extra bedding, until i did a bit of research and found out she was probably nesting? She hasnt been tearing out her fur yet and isnt spayed. Her and Earl havent met in person too much so i dont think she’s pregnant. Can someone help?

It is most likely a false pregnancy. Unspayed does have false pregnancies all the time. The bunny will act kinda grumpy, carry hay around in her mouth, and even pull fur to build a nest.
Are they separated by more than just mesh? Bunnies can breed right through it. And they don’t have to have met in person for too long. They can be finished mating in a matter of seconds. The expression “breed like rabbits” did not come out of nowhere.

Thankyou DarthVadar! I appreciate the help. I had no idea what was going on and yes their hutches are pretty seperate with about a metre of space between them. I guess I will keep an eye out for her and keep updating if anything changes.

Ok good. People will wonder how their rabbit got pregnant and be like “they weren’t together, just in adjoined cages”, but they don’t know wire is no impediment for bunnies lol
