Today I came home from class and Mako has built… a giant NEST. I did just get a male baby bunny but I am pretty sure he is too young to impregnate her. They are in adjacent enclosures though so now I’m wondering if they found a way… Any ideas?

How old is Mako/is she neutered? How old is the baby boy?

I don’t know how old the baby is. Mako is over a year and she’s not fixed but she will be on the 24th. Here’s a pic, maybe you can tell his age:

Male buns can reproduce at a very young age. How long ago did you get the male? Perhaps the presence of a male made her only think she’s pregnant

It could be a false pregnancy.

As NBO said males can reproduce at a very young age (as early as 3 months). Rabbits can breed through cages and are notorious for finding a way to make babies. I would move him to a different area until after she’s spayed.

How long have you had him? Gestation in rabbits is about a month, and females don’t start nesting until a couple days before the litter is going to born, so if you haven’t had him that long, it’s likely just a false pregnancy. I do agree to move their cages farther apart until she is fixed.

Did the friend you got Mako from have other rabbits?

Looking at your other threads, you’ve only had her near 3 weeks.
It also sounds as if you havent had the new baby long at all.

If you’ve only had Mako for 3 weeks, it is possible she may have gotten pregnant before you got her. If she is pregnant and nesting, you can expect her to deliver sometime in the next 2-3 days. If she passes that with no babies (in about 4-5 days) it sounds like a false pregnancy, which can be caused by being in close proximity to an unneutered male.

Rabbit gestation is about 30 days.

There is no way she could have gotten pregnant before I got her. She lived alone. I’ve had him about a week and she’s getting spayed in a week.

If you only had him one week then I doubt she is actually pregnant. Sounds like his presence made her think she was. Either way, you’ll know soon enough. Leave the nest in there for a week if no babies appear, it’s safe to say she had a false pregnancy and you can remove it. But don’t remove it too early or she’ll just pull more fur and keep rebuilding

No babies will appear because as i keep saying she is getting spayed in a week… So unless she’s very pregnant (doubtful) I am not going to worry about it.

Like the other’s explained, rabbits start their nesting habits within days of when they will deliver. So if she is pregnant, the babies will arrive before she is scheduled to see the vet.
As it sounds very unlikely that she is pregnant since she lived alone (and assuming she had zero contact with a male bunny due to living alone aka no bunny play dates, no unsupervised outside time where she could have met a wild boy bunny who wooed her into bed with promises of organic carrot tops…) then it is most likely a false pregnancy due to being around the new bunny while her hormones are still intact.
Like NBO mentioned, don’t remove the nest because she will try to build another one and that will only add stress on top of the highly stressful false pregnancy she is going through.

Yeah she quit nesting and she’s back to her normal self, she quit biting my feet even, so I think it was just kind of adjustment period. BUT next time I know not to get opposite gender buns when I have intact buns in the house!
