Nesting Saga is over

Hi all,

In one of my posts last Sunday, I told you about Holly building a nest.  I was afraid to dismantle it, so I waited a week. I probably could of dismantled it sometime last week, but I wanted to make sure she was done with it. Today we cleaned Holly’s whole area. I’m surprised I don’t have a pink hairless bunny. She packed her hideaway with towels, and other objects, but the fur could of been another bunny.

Starting about Tuesday/Wednesday, Holly has been a lot of fun. Last week, I experiemented letting her out by unlocking her exercise pen.  Well that took a lot of work and a lot of time. Now, I pick her up and take her out.  It’s basically a lift and set down.  She’s been great. She’s been doing binkies and following me around.

She even headbutted me. I think this was an accident. I was laying on my tummy and she was sitting in front of me. I was talking to her. She jumped up quick and knocked me in the head with her head. It didn’t hurt, but it surprised both of us.

I am really glad to hear the false pregnancy is over and she’s having lots of fun again. how funny that she headbutted you!!

Is that common for bunnies to make a nest while not pregnant? Is your Holly spayed? Just curious cuz I had a female lop a few years ago but never seen her do that.

Honestly, I don’t know if it is common. At this time, she is not spayed. That is something that is going to happen in the near future.

I’ve heard of something called a false pregnancy, through my rabbit research…

The female and male mate, but the female is not impregnated. About two weeks after she’ll build a nest. This is how you can tell she isn’t pregnanat from if she is. If she is really pregnant, they build a nest the day before or the day of giving birth. If it’s a false pregnancy they will build a nest 11-14 days after unsucessful mating. Basically they say, ‘let her play house’. It’s nothing to worry about.

I’d assume they could have a hormonal false pregnancy without coupling as well.

Kand K it has to be the latter for Holly. I got Holly in October, and she hasn’t been in contanct with other bunnies since then. Oh well, I just hope she doesn’t do this again. She was pretty stressed out.

Wow, nothing like preparing in advance, lol, making the nest the same day of the birth! My new girl isn’t spayed so if I see her do this now I won’t freak out!

Around Christmas my horse had a false pregnancy and scared the crap out of us all because the stallion had gotten loose with the herd of mares earlier that year. Her udder filled up with milk it was really weird. The vet said it was just her hormones all out of whack and it can happen when they eat an excessive amount of clover.

I wouldn’t be surprised if rabbits could have a hormonal false one too. You know us crazy females and our hormones, lol.
