Well, upon waking this morning, I observed Dawn, our little black otter Netherland Dwarf, running through the living room with a mouthful of hay.  And then another.  And another.  Yep, she’s building a nest.  She’s not pregnant, but she’s not fixed yet either (It’s expensive, I’m poor, don’t judge please).  So I’m not sure why, and want to know if there’s anything I can do to make her feel safer and more secure?

And she looks adorable with a face full of hay…..

I’d offer her a box. Perhaps cut an entrance/exit hole, put it where she is building, and maybe she would like the seclusion. When my bunnies were pregnant, they wanted to be left alone. They got pretty grumpy.

She was a pretty grumpy mommy when she was pregnant, as I recall.  But she’s not getting pregnant anymore, so maybe this is hormonal?  She’s picked a pretty inaccessible location to do this.  She’s also torn up all the carpet, and the cardboard I put down to keep her from tearing up the carpet (Futility!  Finish him!).

She has lots of hidey holes, so maybe she’s decided she wants a permanent one?  I’m at a loss.  But she’s sure working hard at this project.

I would just let her do her thing with occasional adult supervision (Clover? Clover?)

Ha!  Clover took one look at Dawn being manic and said, “I’ll be over in the other litter pan, munching on the non crazy hay…..”

False pregnancy.  She’s plucking at her dewlap like there’s no tomorrow.  Poor confused Dawn.

One of my females had a false pregnancy in between litters. There’s not much you can do (without spaying her) except figure out what her hormonal brain wants. Good luck with that… Give her things to dig at, and wait for it to end.

I got her a small box, cut her a hole big enough for her, and stuffed some hay and ripped up phone book into it.  Should make her happy.
