Franklin is going in to get neutered today in about 7 hours and I am so nervous! I am convinced he will rip out his stitches. What can I do to prevent any problems? Can bunnies wear cones? I’ve read a lot now on after neuter care and all of the advice just says make sure they start eating again because of their delicate tummies. Do you guys recommend acidophilus? My biggest concern is those stitches because he is a big groomer! I’m really nervous to drop him off and probably won’t sleep tonight .

Awe, I think the best thing you can do is just take a deep breath and relax. It won’t help to worry, so just put a positive picture in your mind tonight that everything is just fine. Out of curiosity are you dropping him off in the evening because they are doing surgery tonight or early am?

Bunnies can wear cones, but unless the vet feels it’s necessary or there are signs that he is messing with the stitches, then it is just added stress to post op healing.

Some people do use acidophilus and though I have never used it after surgery and my bunnies recovered fine, it’s a precaution that certainly won’t hurt.

And remember – deep breath & peaceful thoughts.

Thank you! Hes getting dropped off before 8 am which means (thank goodness) he doesnt have to do an overnight. I am unsure how long he’ll have to be at the vet but I am hoping he’ll be ready to be picked up before 2 so he doesn’t have to wait too long. *sigh* I’m trying to take deep breaths!

It is possible that he won’t have any stitches. At least in my case, our vets use a type of super glue to hold the skin together. It helps by not giving them anything to grab ahold of and snip. A rabbit will groom the area a little so don’t jump crazy if they tuck their head but if they seem to be really fixated on it, then its cone time.

It’s evening here Al2, and I don’t know where you are but it’s probably all over now.
                How’d it go?

Well Frank did well today and I just got done checking his stitches. He is still groggy even though the surgery was done at about 11 am. It’s hard for me to tell if he’s actually eating because I have seen him grabbing his hay but I haven’t seen much chewing going on! I am pretty sure he’s going potty again too but he makes it hard for me because he does an excellent job burying everything as soon as he goes. I can tell he’s confused and in pain because he is laying down but still lifting his backside up with his feet. I wish there was someway to help but I know I should leave him alone. I know tomorrow will probably be his most painful day because he won’t be out of it anymore. The vet didn’t really give me any advice about how to ease his pain, she just told me to leave him alone. Do any of you have any tips for ways to make him feel better? I hate to see him suffering.

Oh and about the stitches! The vet said they were internal and that if he gets at the adhesive stitches at all he should still be fine. I’m just trying to make his cage as safe as possible right now. Franklin loves acrobatics and I really don’t want him pulling any post-op stunts!

Great news hes doing well Definitely- groggy is normal

On the pain, many vets don’t give pain meds, but I think it helps them get back to normal quicker. You can phone the vet and ask for a few doses of Metacam (it’s once a day, small amount-and works like a charm) -I think it makes them get back to eating quicker

He’ll be fine, just don’t let him do too much for the first few days. Get the metacam, buns love the stuff! Monkey was begging for hers like she does treats every day lol.

Frank is already good as new! I am shocked… this couldn’t have gone any better. He is very swollen but I cant even find the incision. He keeps hopping over his water dish and being bratty! I never thought I would be so happy to tolerate his bunntitude! Thanks for all the support, you all are so great!
