        Hi there!

I just adopted a bunny last week. I was told it was an unfixed female. She is super needy it seems. She runs circles around me and makes a buzzing noise which I am told is a mating behavior. She also thumps sometimes while doing this. If I pet her over and over and over she calms down and stops. She does not however like to be held, which I know most buns don’t. Is this just a mating behavior? Will she ever calm down? I feel like I’m not giving her enough attention? Thoughts?

        Thanks!

It’s hormonal mating behavior and it will subside when she’s spayed. For now, do your best to tolerate and provide her with attention! You don’t need to bend over backwards every time though.

Gotcha. Does this only happen while they are in heat and subside when not? Or is it constant in unspayed females? I used to have two females that were not spayed and they never did this, but they did live together and were not really interested in me. Thank you for your response.

Doesn’t sound particularly needy to me? She’s hormonal though.

Rabbits don’t come into heat like dogs and cats. They are always fertile so they could always act hormonally until spayed

My bunny used to constantly circle me and buzz around before he was neutered. After he got the procedure, it stopped immediately! I almost miss it sometimes, but it definitely is just a hormonal behavior. Don’t know if it’s different for girls, but I would be careful while she circles you because if I let Alfie go on for too long, it would end in a big spray of pee!

She does it constantly. Is this normal? I am going to look into getting her spayed. Any ideas how much a spay usually costs?

Yeah as mentioned earlier this is a hormonal behavior and it will happen constantly till she is spayed.

Spaying can cost up to $500, depending on where you live. But I think if you look hard enough you can get your animal spayed for really cheap like $50! Now that’s a bargain! I think the average is about $100-$150.

Please don’t opt for the cheapest option just because it’s cheap(er) though, always go to an experienced vet even if it costs more

Yup, make sure you spay her at an experienced vet, who knows how to handle rabbits. Definitely get some pain killers.

My boys were $350 each, but that also came with bloodwork, a pre neuter exam, the procedure, 36 hour vet care, and painkillers. I think it’s worth spending more if they keep your bun overnight, because those are the crucial hours. It did a lot for my nerves with my vet checking them every 2-3 hours, and giving me updates every 6 hours. Well worth it.

My female Petunia did the circling with Charlie our dog and she circled Mr Buns but she ended up spraying him (and me in the cross fire), my childhood bun Flopsey would do the circles and the buzzing noises every morning when we let him out- tail up and circles is excited mating behavior and completely normal. Do get her spayed because they are prone to cancer and this eliminates the chances severely and it makes me them such better pets. My Cinni who I spayed at 4 yrs of age turned into a different more laid back bun and lasted to be 13! Petunia is getting spayed April 4th and I cannot wait because she is hyper as anything- do you find your buns has a ton of energy?

Lioneheads tend to be a high energy high strung bun as opposed to lops who are more laid back from what I am told- I have had both and feel this is true,
