So I havent been on here in a long time due to being real busy. I had gotten Radar back in May and he got real sick for all that may remember he now is such a part of our family, but I found out that we arent supposed to have him in military housing… OPPS. We are getting ready to move from Alaska to GA and I need to find him a good home I dont want to but for some reason military housing says no rabbits in housing. I have asked a few people but I refuse to give him to another military family due to knowing he may get bounced around. He is a GREAT bunny. He is litter trained while in his cage. He is affectionate. I wanted to know if anyone knew of someone in the area of Anchorage Ak that would take him in and give him the home I want him to have.

Well, if you cannot find a home in Alaska you might be able to find a home in Georgia where you are moving to.

that was my thought too… did they give you a reason why you can’t have a rabbit? did you tell them that he is a “caged” animal?

If you were in Maryland I would surely take him. =( If you move to the states you could find the nearest HRS and maybe explain your situation?

They only allow dogs, cats, fish, and birds. That is just their rules.I wish I would have actually read the rules before I got him because obviously I wouldnt have gotten him I have asked two people up here waiting to see if they decide they want a bunny. I just think it is stupid. They had said only domesticated animals but clearly state no rabbtits and only the animals I wrote above, my rabbit is better potty trained than my kid LOL…In Ga they even state that aggressive breed of dogs arent allowed on base if you get caught breaking the rules you get kicked out of housing and we cant have that.

Boy I’m having a heck of a time responding to this thread! One timeout after another!

Sarita, isn’t this thread in the wrong forum? Just wondering. I don’t think many folks who could help would see it here.

Jenn, I am sorry to hear you are not going to be allowed to keep your bunny. Odd, I don’t think military here in Fairbanks has such a rule, I notice a lot of folks on base having quite a range of animals. It is too bad I am all the way up here (and maxed with three bunnies at the moment) or I would consider taking him.
Just out of curiosity, what was his great illness earlier this year and what kind of bunny is he? How old is he? Does he have any special needs? I ask in case I run across someone who would be interested in keeping him and caring for him. Did you try adding a post on craigslist? I see ads for bunnies there in Alaska from time to time.

Try craigslist and kijiji.com and thoroughly screen people. Is there anyway you can just not let them know about him and keep him?

I have thought about craigslist  that will probably be my next step. We thought about just keeping him, and hope that we didnt get caught but we just dont want to get caught by housing and get in trouble.  I do not think a lot of people on base realize what type of animals you are allowed to have I mean I didnt read the housing manual until just now and we have been here 4yrs.

I had bought Radar at Petco in May 4-5days after he got sick he had that common parasite lordy I forgot what it is called. But petco paid for the vet and he is all better because of my persistance I think he would have died if I wouldnt have bought him. I had talked to a person at petco and they said another bunny got sick with it and the person that bought it brought him back and he died   The only special need he is in need of is TONS of petting and attention. He loves to be petted and to get out and play. He is litter trained when he is in his cage when I let him out he scatters his litter box so I havent enforced that part. I usually just limit his time out. He is a really good bunny he has such personality that I just never thought was possible in a rabbit.

There are some animal shelters in Alaska (ok I know it’s big but I just googled.) I’d definitely try kijiji though it’s a good site too.

That’s sad that the military housing there doesn’t allow rabbits.  I know a ton of people here on base who have house rabbits, and there’s not a problem.  Have you actually asked them about rabbits stating that he’d be caged and in the house itself?  It’s possible that whoever wrote the by laws just wasn’t thinking about rabbits as an indoor pet, and I can see why they’d not want a rabbit hutch and run outside, but that’d be a completely different situation.

i agree that you should try speaking with them as a last ditch effort. they are still considered “farm animals” in most of the country, so i’m guessing it might just be a misunderstood thing. why would you be able to have a messy bird but not a caged hamster? if you can discuss this with someone and make the hamster/rabbit comparison that might help the situation. we all know they are not caged 24/7, but they don’t need to know that… if you were able to get this turned around, it would not only help you out in the short-term, but future families there that have house rabbits. if nothing else, i’d want to know the reason why they were not allowed… do you have kids? you could play the “kid card”. my kids are SOOOOO ATTACHED to BUNNY!!!!!! please…

I actually looked up in the housing manual here in Alaska at Fort Richardson and your not allowed to have rabbits, soooo OPPS who would have ever guessed obviously not me. When I asked they said because that is their policy. We have thought seriously to just  take him and take the chance on getting caught with him. We will just have to see I guess. Im not having any luck finding him a home. I called a rescue place and they said if we cant find him a home by the time we leave she will take him in and that usually litter trained and fixed bunnies are easy to find homes for. HA not for me LOL……
