Need well wishes for Harley again.

I swear this bunny just gets sick for the pain meds. His latest malady this week is a bladder stone….lodged right at the end of his, uh, wanker. His boybits are round and swollen like a watetmrllon tacked on his tummy. We’re taking the least stressful route first – try to relax him with pain meds enough that he might pass it on his own. His vitals are fine and he is peeing, so this route seems safe for the time. The next step will be to see if the vet can sedate him a bit and manually work it out. Our vet is not confident in doing surgery himself, so we’re trying the other stuff first. Harley is definitely peeing…he’s leaving little puddles all over the place lol. Its been a couple days since the vet visit. The swelling has gone down a good bit and he’s more active and not crying anymore.

Bruno is fussing over him like a mother hen. Lol So vibes that puppy will pop out on its own!

Oh dear, poor Harley. No wonder he was crying. You’re sure it’s a stone? I thought it was rare for a rabbit to pass one on their own. Hopefully it will resolve itself, but the idea of it partially blocking the urethra scares me.

The vet did an x-ray and that’s where it showed it was. The vet wasn’t real sure it would pass on its own either, but said as long as he’s still urinating, its OK to give it a couple days. I don’t know much about these things, but he seems to be a good vet. But we’re definitely watching him like a hawk.

There ought to be something they can do. Those stones can be pretty prickly on delicate tissue (and could cause irritation) and even with pain meds can’t be comfortable. Poor little guy.

Is there a bunny-safe way of increasing the acid in his diet? Old fix was to eat highly acidic foods to increase urine acidity.. helped wear down the stone so it could pass easier. Not sure how to go about that with bunnies though.

The swelling has gone down a lot. He’s peeing more….or leaving bigger puddles lol I may call the vets tomorrow to see if there’s anything we can feed him that might help break it down. Oddly enough, by watching Jim, he doesn’t show there is really anything wrong.

Oh our poor Harley – ouch!!! Is it ok to admit my eyes are watering for him??? My hubby’s father passed a stone and my hubby reckons he was white in the face for days – eeek! I hope this isn’t causing Harley to much discomfort or pain – it’s so unfair, to lose it naturally it has to pass through the most tender part of his body. Cringe!
But it sounds like he his coping well and I know your keeping a close eye on him. I have no idea about certain foods that can break it down??? But surely the vet would know???

Urinary acidifiers – Due to the fact that rabbits are herbivores, and their urine is normally alkaline, using products designed to make the urine more acidic not only will not work, but in some cases could be harmful. This is different than the situation in cats, which are carnivores with naturally acidic urine. In cats with bladder stones it is common practice to administer urinary acidifiers or to feed special diets designed to create a slightly acid urine to prevent further stone formation.

Had Harley to the vet this morning. He has passed the stone!!!!! Wooo! The vet said he couldn’t feel it anymore and an xray confirmed it didn’t move its way back up. It was nowhere on the scan! Go Harley!!! The vet was very pleased/surprised I think.
