there is a woman on one of my other bunny communities who is in a bit of a bind.
She works at a dog shelter but took in a rabbit that was dumped in their parking lot in a laundry detergent bucket! She’s already spent hundreds of dollars getting Miffy spayed and checked on, and has totally fallen for her. But now she’s got a bit of a problem:
Despite a “No Pets” policy at my apartment complex, I brought Miffy home from the animal shelter with approval from all three of my housemates.
My roommate quickly determined, without any assistance from a doctor, that she was “allergic” to rabbits. She showed absolutely no classic allergy symptoms, refused medication assistance from me, and refused to go to a doctor. I bought a HEPA filter for our room, stored Miffy’s hay in an air tight container, cleaned the cage and vacuumed the carpet every day to ensure minimal problems with dust and dander. These practices alone are enough to relieve the symptoms of most mild to moderate allergy sufferers, but not my roommate. I continued to keep Miffy for three reasons: 1) I was convinced my roommate was faking her allergies, 2) I had already spent hundreds of dollars on Miffy, and 3) My roommate herself INSISTED that I keep the rabbit- and spent nights at her boyfriend’s house or on the couch.
Last weekend, my roommate was dumped by her boyfriend, and it’s been nothing but drama ever since (suicide threats, passive-aggressive behavior, etc.). Now that she doesn’t have her boyfriend to cling to, she wants “her” room back, and Miffy gone. She threatened to call the apartment management if I did not get rid of her, and gave me a week to make arrangements. I am furious and for more reasons than this, simply can’t stomach living here anymore. I left my housemates a note saying that I was moving out and would continue to pay rent as per the lease agreement, but that they would have to prepare to split utilities three ways instead of four.
Realistically however, I can not move into a new place where I pay rent until the lease is up at the end of June- so while I am going to make it a point not to occupy this apartment, I can not move into a new place with Miffy until July 1st. I love Miffy and refuse to give her up permanently, but I am looking for a friend to take care of her until July.
A friend of mine in San Francisco had rabbits when he was young and is interested in having rabbits again. He doesn’t seem to know that much about rabbit care since it’s been so long since he’s had them, but he has been reading up on them and intends to get another rabbit in a month- so not only would Miffy have to endure a six hour road trip, but would have to be introduced to another rabbit after being in a new home for only a month- only to endure another six hour road trip a month after that, to wind up back with me but again in a totally new place.
If it’s the only possibility, then I will trust this guy to take care of her… but I am so stressed out about this whole thing.
So I was wondering if anyone knew someone who could help by fostering this bun until 7/1? It would be great if she could find someone local so that she could visit Miffy. It might be a great chance for someone who might be l=thinking about getting a bunny but wants a “tryout” as laren could help them learn and they could help care for Miffy.
Here’s a link to a video of Miffy from this morning, before all hell broke loose:
She’s got one so bunny will be safe – I’m just trying to find her something closer to home so she can visit Miffy. She has done so much for this bun, especially since she wasn’t planning on it. I have so much respect for her for stepping up like that,.
Aw! What an awful situation! I can’t help out, but I really hope she can find someone to take care of Miffy… really, July 1st is going to be here before we know it. She can’t contact anyone else thru the rescue she volunteers with? It is only a couple months…
I personally have no room to take care of another rabbit (unless she doesn’t mind the rabbit staying in its cage for a month), but tell her to ask around at some rabbit rescues. There are tons around here.
What does “something closer” mean? I would be more than happy to take her for a while, as long as san diego isnt too far for visits for her. I have 2 buns now but there is always room! If she doesnt want her around the other buns she doesnt have to be but whatever! Let me know details, and we can see if it will work on both ends! Let me know!
happy news – arrangements have been made with a neighbor for the temp fostering. So Psycho roomate has been thwarted. buns and humans are safe, and Muffy and her human will be finding a new pet-friendly place in July.
Glad you found help. If it were me I would be trying to convince psycho roommate to move out, leaving you with your apartment, a nice roommate, no moving expenses and a bunny. You’re a good person, Wendyzski.
(I know so many people on so many different boards, sometimes it seems like I have super-networking powers. My fave was getting a candymaker from TX on one of my boards in touch with someonein MN who lived near her fave supplier who was going out of business and would do in-store orders only. )
