Need Safe house plants/flowers!

I LOOOVEE flowers and plants, but I’m scared Moxie (or our cat) might eat a toxic plant, therfore we normally don’t have any. I would like some flowers/plants that are safe (or mini trees. I liked the mini cherry tree but pitted fruits are bad for animals)  that are safe in case Moxie eats some. Does anyone know of some good ones? Thanks in advance! 

(plus, are dandelion greens (the stalk too) safe for buns incase I grew those in pots?)

I found a few things here. I would say if you find conflicting information on a plant (i.e. some sites say it’s ok, others say it’s not, err on the side of caution and do not grow it).

All parts of dandelions (Including stocks and roots) are safe for bunnies. Also they make pretty good tea (Root) and taste good in salad. (Leaves and flowers) 

Lavender is also safe for bunnies, you can even give it as a treat for your rabbit. Mint is also safe, and they do get big and are pretty hardy, I have one out where it sometimes gets really cold, and it’s yet to die, I also forget to water it all the time. Plus it smells amazing and tastes good just straight from the plant, I sometimes steal a leaf or two when I clip my mint for the bunnies.

Also there’s tons of herbs you could plant that are safe, basil, parsley, dill, rosemary, oregano, and sage are a few that come to mind. (Which, you can use for yourself in cooking too and they also smell amazing in my opinion.)

Super markets often sell potted herbs in or near the produce section. I like to keep a few on my window sill. Though they don’t live as long as some of my other house plants, since they tend to eventually get eaten. Basil and mint are my personal favorites.

There is actually a style of flower pot called a strawberry pot. Of course you can grow other things in it, but strawberries are totally edible and quite decorative.

Daisies are safe. The leaves are popular with my buns. Nasturtium is safe and both flowers and leaves are edible. Roses are of course fine, both flowers and leaves. There are some Canadian roses that are very hardy.

A tiny bit of clover can be used as a treat, you can dry it and feed during winter as a hay topper or treat.

Cornflowers are edible and violet’s and pansies.

Most herbs are perfectly safe and make nice house plants too. Some “wildflowers” are safe like asters, daisies, members of the sunflower family, etc. I read carnations are also safe, but they probably aren’t something you’d keep as a houseplant.

I need some plants in my house too. I want to teach Everly how to take care of plants (and hopefully, not to be a black thumb like Mommy!). I’m paranoid about leaves falling and bunnies getting them so I don’t currently have any. I’m going to get a cactus and some herbs to start.

I don’t have the best luck with cacti. Everything else does great. Cacti that I keep eventually turn to mush.I’m on the east coast now. When I was on the west coast in San Diego, I coudl keep cacti like a pro. I don’t know what it is about Virginia, but even indoors – I hae a hard time with cacti lately. I like herbs myself. They all flower at some stage, and once they flower I give the entire plant flowers and all, to the bunnies, and start over. Honestly, most of what I grow is edible. I sprout bird seed and pasture mixes, and I’m growing a large container of pasture grass for the birds/bunnies. As for flowering plants – my bunnies eat whatever they can reach, including the contraversial flowering plants.

My bunnies will devour a begonia. So will my birds. Begonias are on some good bird lists, and some bad bird lists. I haven’t sen them listed for rabbits one way or the other. Africna violets are safe. I keep them for the birds – the bunnies would eat them up in a heartbeat. I have 3 begonias that I rotate out for the birds.

German chamomile is supposed to calm them down. Thought it would calm my nervous female but she hated it.

Rose flowers can be eaten by bunnies and people. Had a Nepalese room mate who put roses in food. It was actually very tasty.

drwil, I had that experience too with chamomile. Bunnies really hated it. But I have read here that some buns love it, some will even drink chamomile tea! (Not hot, of course).

That a plant is bunny-safe, doesn’t mean the bun will eat it =)

African marigolds are popular with my buns and, unfortunately, with the wild buns outside so I have to make little chicken-wire cages around them or grow them in elevated pots. “Normal” marigolds (calendula) are supposedly bunny-safe, but my buns shun them.

Cacti are the only plant I don’t kill. I had a cactus for over 15 years when I lived at home. When my Mom moved she threw it in the garden as compost. I was mad. He even had a name: Arnie.

That surprises me since African Marigolds aren’t supposed to be safe, which is why when listing marigolds on rabbit safe list they always write Calendula after

Herbs are great if you can keep them in a sunny window sill. I don’t grow any plants inside because there’s no suitable spots but I’ve got plenty out in the garden. Basil, parsley, rosemary, mint, thyme, lavender etc.

I think I’m going to look into hanging planters for my room, since I’d like some actual flowers (and most are toxic).

Just make sure you’re cautious about leaves and flowers that drop to the floor. Because bunnies will find any and eat them in no time at all

Tagetes erecta (African marigolds) are much used in the food industry as a colorant. I can’t find anything that says they’re toxic, but to be safe, avoid.

Wild rabbits will also eat chives in early spring, so they are not a good example of what’s good for rabbits. (Although in early spring they are probably crazy for anything sprouting after the long winter.)
