Need help with sick rabbit

I haven’t been on the forum for a few years, but I really need your help now.

My oldest female, 6 years, has fallen ill. She and my other two rabbits have been housed at a rabbit rescue for 3 weeks, while I was away. I picked them up Sunday and immediately noticed something was wrong.

My usually super social rabbit keeps to herself and runs off if any of us go near her. She has lost her appetite, she pees whereever whenever (completely transparent pee), and now she is panting for air. She makes sure to keep her head up high which I am sure is because she is trying to catch her breath.

I took her to the vet wednesday and he said she was fine, but had probably been stressed, and that I should just get her old routines back and then she would starting eating. But it is Thursday evening now, and she is not fine! I feed her with Critical Care a few times a day and she does eat as well (just small bits now and then), so I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with her stomach.

I have looked up renal failure, heart problems and whatever I can think off, but I have no clue. I will get her to another vet tomorrow morning, but until then is there anyone who can just suggest some diseases I should look up? I would like to have som suggestions for the vet to check, so I am not just told that there is nothing to do.

Any suggestions???

Do you think she may be starting a respiratory infection? I remember my vet telling me that keeping their heads up is a sign that there is some stress on their lungs, get the vet to check if they sound clear. I can’t remember what the condition was called right now but if I remember I will definitely let you know. The vet had said it would have been treatable though (if it is the same thing). Keep an eye on her, make sure to get her to a vet sooner if it seems to be getting worse.

Is she eating/pooping?

Hmmm….I would have the vet check her teeth if the vet hasn’t.

But honestly, I don’t recommend you try to diagnose her on your own – you need to have some diagnostic work done like bloodwork and possibly some x-rays otherwise you are just stressing out and spinning your wheels based on what you really don’t know.

I hope your vet appointment goes well tomorrow.

Thanks for your input. I don’t need them now though.

She just passed away. I called the vet right after making my first post. New vet said it was a heart condition, possibly with a renal failure. She was in pain as she couldn’t pass urine. She died 3-4 minutes after we came to the vet’s.

Hi guys.

I appreciate your thoughts, and I apoligize for my short reply the other day. I was – and am still – completely heartbroken and had no words.

It went so fast. I had a feeling she was dying Thursday evening, but up until then all symptoms was only that she wasn’t as social or as hungry as she used to be. The vet Wednesday said she was just stressed and would be fine, whereas the vet Thursday evening when it was all too late said she had a heart problem. I shouldn’t have taken her to the vet. She was in pain and screamed when he examined her and she tried to jump into my arms all the time, and I just let him continue to do the examinations even though it was completely futile. During the examination she died. I should have let her die at home in peace.

At least, next time I know when a rabbit starts panting for air, then it is time to bring it to the vet for its final injection.

Things will never be the same again without Molly. She was my special angel with a big personality.

I recently lost my special little man, so I know how you feel. Things are never the same when they are gone. You just have to go on and keep them in a special place in your heart. ***Hugs***

Stormy. I lost him in September. He had cancer.

It’s crazy how someone so little can take up such a big place in your heart.
