Hi, I am needing some help and information ASAP as I have been told a lot of mixed information about bonding rabbits.

I have a 1 year old mini lop male, he is neutered and I would love to get him a friend. I have a baby boy mini rex on hold at the moment and plan to get him neutered ASAP

I was told that they would get on fine once neutered and they will be able to become bonded, and I have read everywhere that mini rexes are a friendly breed that get on well with others.

Another person has told us that mini rexes are bossy and will not get on with my rabbit at all, and also that two boy neutered rabbits just won’t get along.

I would love some help and for someone to set everything straight as soon as possible, thank you!

Lots of people here have successful same sex bonds. I think tanlover14 has 6 now? The main thing I’ve read here about bonding is not to start the process until at least 4 weeks following the neuter, to let the hormones fully dissipate. I’ve read also that can take up to 8 weeks. The bonding section here in the forums is a WEALTH of information. You should really check that out. I am sure others with actual bonding experience will respond to your post soon!

Any sex combination can be bonded. It depends more on the personality of the bunnies. The most important thing is that they are spayed/neutered and given enough recovery time for their hormones to settle down before starting any bonding work.

I can’t speak for other Mini-Rex’s but my Bridge bunny was certainly bossy. But he also had a great, very loving personality. I was having a lot of success bonding my male bunnies, Mini-Rex and Mini-Lop, to the point where they were completely happy together in their play area. Unfortunately, my little Mini-Rex passed away because I could cement the bond.

We see all sorts of bonded pairs (trios, etc) here on BB. Age, size, sex doesn’t really set any limits. Check out “Bunny Info” section of this site for some great start-up info on bonding.

You really cannot judge a rabbit by breed. It’s usually recommended to let your rabbit pick out their own spayed or neutered friend for best results.

Definitely read up on bonding and see if that is something you are willing to do as it can be very stressful and not everyone has success bonding so you would need to consider if you would be willing to keep the rabbits separate.

Breed is something that tends to matter a lot with dogs, but not as much in rabbits. Some breeds do have reputations that are deserved but I still feel that individuals within breeds vary so much, and the way an individual responds to humans vs other rabbits can be so different.

Like Sarita said, there is a possibility you might not be able to do it and you might have to keep the rabbits separate. This will have everything to do with the personalities of the rabbits and nothing to do with the breed or gender of the rabbits.

I have a bossy mini rex, too! She’s a female, but you’ll notice in the signature picture, she was very happily bonded to our male mini lop (until he passed away last June)…

Females can be more territorial, PLUS she was the “first rabbit” and had already claimed the house as her own. But even with all that going against us, the buns bonded in 3 weeks.
