need help

hi i just adopted my carrie to be freinds with little grey. i found out that she is 7 months and had been living with her brother untill 2 weeks ago. how likely is it that she could be expecting babies and is there any way to tell?

Welcome. It’s extremely likely that she is pregnant. Your best bet is to see if the vet can palpate her and tell – they can only tell though if the pregnancy is more advanced though. I would certainly take her in either way to the vet for a thorough checkup. I’m crossing my fingers that she is not pregnant though and you don’t have to deal with the stress of babies.

its very likely she could be pregnant. Make sure you watch and see if she is pulling any hair to build a nest.

Female rabbits can get pregnant as early as 10 weeks old, so yes there is a posibility she may be pregnant. I would take her to the vet and have her checked out. You can also read up on how to Palpitate her yourself and feel for babies, but I would still honestly have a Vet take a look.

thanks. im in a small town though and the only vet that deals with small animals is a good drive away and for someone without a car like myself it may be awile before i get a drive. for now i’ll act like she is. does a nest box need a top? what i have has a bottom and high sides but no top.

no but she dosent even have a bed yet. the bottom of the cage is mesh. im looking for a new one. would she pull her fur if there was nowhere to put it? im going to see if her belly has bumps in a few minutes.

hi my last post didnt seem to show up. no she isnt. but she has nowhere to build a nest yet. i just got her this morning and shes very nervous. she has never lived inside and isnt use to being handled. right now shes in a mesh type cage. franticly looking for a new one. its just mesh on the bottom.

well, she is in a new environment and needs some time to settle down. most rabbits hate being handled >,<

the period that a rabbit holds babies is about 30 days.

what kind of cage are you looking for for her?

just a basic one with a plastic tray bottom. the same as my little greys in. i wanted to find a second hand one online but its looking like i will have to get a new one. the one i have would have been good enough untill she could have moved in with little grey.

Could it be possible that she or the other bunny she used to live with were sexed incorrectly? I mean… I guess it gets pretty obvious with males, but you never know.

it could be posable but i think the person was experenced with bunnys.she was aparently with five brothers and was the only female. but the last one to go was 2 weeks ago. i never saw the other ones. carrie and little grey traded spaces. little grey is spunky and hes letting me know he dosent like the new cage. carrie grinded her teeth alittle bit the last time i picked her up and was extremly uncopertive. she was fairly good earlyer today. but she seems fine now.

why did you switch their cages? the bunnies will pick up on each others scent and can become angry and not happy. i think you mentioned your boy isn’t neutered, right?

if the person you got her from is experienced with rabbits, she wouldn’t have kept ALL the rabbits together for that long due to rabbits sexually maturing very quickly

i swiched there cages because i tought if she did have babys they would fall between the bars. the box wouldnt fit in it ether. they both seem fine now. carrie is re aranging her furniture and dosent act scared anymore when i walk over. and eating the hay out of her box.

That was a good idea, giving her the tray bottom cage. You can place cardboard or something down temporarily in the other cage for Little Grey. Give her lots of hay. If she starts nesting, she’ll begin carrying it in her mouth to make the nest. I’m thinking just a cardboard box with entry way cut into it might work. If you have one without a top, just tip it upside down so the floor is just the cage floor. Then cut a small entry way into it.

Even if she’s not pregnant, she’ll appreciate a hidey box.

I am also wondering if they weren’t sexed correctly, or if she is in fact a boy. I think it’s odd that she wouldn’t have had a litter already if she’s been capable of having a litter for approximately 2-3 months.

Once you get her housing situation figured out, I would continue to search for exotic vets in your area. It’s going to be incredibly important that you have one you can rely on. You have two rabbits that need to be altered now. If she is pregnant, rabbit births do not always go off without a hitch, it’s possible she may require emergency care to safely deliver. And then you are responsible for the health of however many babies she might potentially have.

Is your small town a farming community? If so, some of the larger animal vets may also be willing to see rabbits as they can be considered “livestock” in some areas.

there is a vet up the road that will take other animlas in an emergancy. the usuly only deal with cats and dogs but they took my mothers goat when he was really sick. that makes sence that she would have already had babys. i think the person probly could tell and just lied to me to get rid of her/him. i could tell if she would stay still. ill get my mom to help, they breed rabbits. thats where little grey is from.
