Need Help

Bunny going thru moulting and has stopped eating and rinking. Is there anything at home I can do to help him. I dont get paid for a few days and he wont eat anything.

There may be a chance that he has hair clogging his digestive tract. How long has it been since you’ve seen him eat or drink?

Have you tried offering him leafy greens? It is best to give him stuff that is high in fiber to help him pass what is clogging his system. If he doesn’t eat within 24 hours since you saw him last eat., there is a serious danger and you will want to take him to the vet ASAP.

One more question – have you noticed a change in his pooping habits? Like not pooping, smaller poops, or soft poops? These can be an indicator of a problem.

today when i cleaned his cage i notices he had poop stuck to his butt and i washed it off. he’s usually very very active. all today he just lays around and does nothing at all.

When you say poops stuck to his butt – was it smooshed on or hanging off in a “string of pearls” fashion? When they ingest things they can’t digest, they sometimes pass it in a fashion that looks like a string of pearls.

I would definitely keep an eye on your bunny because lethargy, lack of eating, and lack of pooping are signs of GI stasis, where the digestive system is clogged. Make sure he has some fresh leafy greens, water, and unlimited hay. These are all things that could help him pass whatever is blocking his system. If you do not see him eat or poop within the next day, please take him to the vet, as it is very serious and he could die!

Welcome to BinkyBunny Leggs6801! I’m sorry to hear your bunny isn’t well.

When your bunny stops eating it is definitely an emergency – and you need to get to a bunny vet to help you. Sometimes vets will offer some type of financing to help you get through until you get paid, so don’t let the stop you from making an appointment. When bunny’s do not eat for 24 hours, it can stop their digestive system, and can be fatal to the bunny. I do not want to scare you, but I want you to know this is an urgent situation that needs to be dealt with within 24 hours of your bunny stopping eating.

Can you tell us some more about your bunnies diet? Does he eat a lot of hay? Hay is the main thing that keeps a bunnies digestive tract moving, and if it is not about 95% of his diet, that is probably what is causing the bunny to have stasis (when the digestive tract gets clogged) – and soft poops. The moulting can add to the problem, and because the bunny gets all that hair in their system, it can add to the problem.

Have you gotten him to eat anything yet?

I know you said you don’t get paid for a while, but you can still take him to the vets. If you let them know ahead of time, they’ll let you leave post dated cheques or pay in payments and if money’s an issue they may even charge you less! It sounds like he’s really sick and not eating/pooping is an emergency.

Hi Leggs, can you describe to us the diet your rabbit has and what kinds of treats he eats? This may better help us help you, but by all means do not wait to take your rabbit to the vet. Have you tried tempting him with a fragrant green like cilantro or mint? Does your rabbit have unlimited access to hay? Fiber is very important in a rabbit diet as it helps to push through undigested fur that collects in the GI tract and prevents it from becoming a blockage.

You can force feed critical care if you have it or grind up some pellets with water and feed with a syringe (you can get them at a drug store).
