Nearby rescue doesn’t neuter rabbits

I’m out of the house 10 hours a day, five days a week. For this reason I want to get my rabbit bonded to another friendly rabbit as soon as possible, if it suits him. I’m getting him neutered at the end of June.

There is a rescue centre near me that currently has 17 rabbits in need of homes, but the rescue state they are unable to spay or neuter the rabbits. I’m not even sure if they vaccinate them. Would you avoid a place like that? My main concern is bringing a female home, vaccinating her, spaying her, bonding with her myself, for my rabbit to hate her. I’d feel terrible taking her back to the shelter,

some shelter simply do not have the funds. they aren’t “bad” shelters and this shouldn’t discourage you from giving a bunny a loving home.

You can technically still have a trial period with a bunny when they aren’t fixed if its a girl since they aren’t as aggressive as males but people just discourage it because its healthier to get them spayed and easier to bond.

I understand that you’d be worried about finding the right one but in my experience any bunny can be bonded so long as there is no circumstance. it just takes time and may take longer with imperfect matches.

Again this is all my opinion. I’m not an expert but I have done some research, talked to seasoned bunny owners, and own a pair of bunnies.

Hormonal females can be just as aggressive as they are usually very territorial Nonhormonal/fixed rabbits will act hormonally when put around a hormonal bunny since they “feed” off of the scent. If you go to that shelter, you would have to pick one that you think best fits your current bunny then work on prebonding before the new bunny is spayed/neutered, and actual bonding about 2 months after the new bunny is spayed/neutered

This is incorrect – males and females can be equally aggressive and it isn’t advised at all to bond any rabbit that hasn’t been spayed or neutered.

The best thing to do is speed dating. Find a rabbit who’s personality doesn’t outright conflict with yours (things like an immidate attack) if the bunny is curious and keeps distance, grooms in presence, or flops are great signs that a new bunny is willing to accept a new friend. HOWEVER they can not officially bond until they are both fixed and healed then you can begin the process

Thankyou everyone for your help. I might go to the SPCA instead, I feel bad for that shelter but what can you do! SPCA only has had 2 rabbits in my area for ages.

It can take up to two months for hormones to drain for males (up to six months for females). Its usually within a month, or a few days over a month Two months is also recommended in case the newly fixed rabbit goes through a post neuter craze where hormones spike for a few days
