Skunklionshow, your study reminded me of a film that came out last year; The Black Balloon. You may or may not have heard of it, it was a small independant film that has similar theme to your study. The writer/director, Elissa Down, grew up with two autistic brothers. The film is semi-autobiographical but it isn’t a doco on autism. I haven’t seen it, it’s on my list along with many others! I just recall reading about it because it featured quite a bit in our local media – director being young Aussie film maker etc…

This is a great study. I think there is alot to be known about autism.

              I ditto Sarita, I think it’s a great study.

I feel the more people understand an illness the more willing they are to help find cures, treatments or ways to make their lives better.

I knew even my close co-workers were puzzled at my own protectiveness and anxiety over my son’s gran mal seizures. Since John Travolta’s family suffered such a horrible, heart-breaking tragedy and the resulting spotlight on epilepsy, many have come up to tell me they didn’t realize what a debilitating illness it is and the stigma attached to it.

I hope your study goes well, the more the public learns about autism, the better.

              Kathy

Thank  you all for your support and input.  1 out of 150 births will be an autistic child….it’s a very alarming statistic.  During my lit review I learned that it is very rare to have studies that ask siblings of children w/ illness or disability what they think.  I think its important to let the sibs know that they were being heard.

Krlspce:  It’s interesting what you said.  Many families that have members w/ “invisible” illnesses or disabilty feel similar to what you said.  I think it’s incrediably important for everyone to be aware of this when they make a “snap judgement”.  All my best to your family.  I hope your son’s condition has improved.

Jersey:  I’m definitely going to do some hunting for that movie.  Thanks
