Finally got Mimzy’s nails trimmed down a bit last night. It was hard because I was missing my high powered flashlight and couldn’t really see his quicks that well, but I took off the longer ends that I could see and just did the ‘press, press, clip’ test on the ones I couldn’t see. I think only one toe he pulled back like I’d gotten too close, and that toe was actually twisted sideways a bit, probably from the extra nail length. So I hope he hasn’t sprained it.

In examining him though, I notice his runny nose is still bothering him some, he tends to have very tiny amounts of goober dried on his forefeet and I think he’s gotten it dried into the fur at the end of his left ear as well, which he usually washes his face with. Either that or he’s scratched the tip enough to pull chunks of fur and leave some cuts that had scabbed over. I put some plain neosporin on them last ngiht and today they look much better…but poor guy. He’s in need of a checkup. And I shouldn’t have waited so long to trim him. I’m lucky he didn’t put an eye out or something.

One of my cats will get like this too, her rear foot nails are so long, when she scratches herself she actually digs furrows into her chin and neck and around her ears that bleed and scab. You wouldn’t believe how sharp Mimzy’s nails were at the ends, they were the longest I’ve seen them in awhile.

One of them may have broken off as well. Perhaps this happened when I heard him tearing around his pen the other day. There was no damage to the quick or the toe, but I didn’t have as much to clip off that one.

Also, despite changing his hay, he still seems to be having sneezing problems and his eyes are putting out more sleepies than usual. The last time the vet medicated him she gave him Zithromax and it did really well for him. Does anyone know if that can be given a second time to a rabbit or is it a one-time treatment? I think since I wasn’t sure how far those mold spores went into his 3rd cut timothy that we tossed out, he should probably be examined and see if he needs to be given something to clear his lungs of anything that might have nestled in there the few times he was eating that.

And I don’t know if it’s just because I’m getting older myself and don’t see as well as I used to…but poor Mimz is starting to look like an old bunny to me. He’s only 3. I want him to be around for a lot longer.

He was sure enjoying his snuggles though. ^_^ And he went over to Fiver’s pen to say hi. The two of them are so cute together, I really hope I can get them to be best buds.

A further note, Mimzy STILL hates being handled, even this far into his life with me. I can’t get him to tolerate being lifted far enough up to inspect his stomach and nether regions. He gets all kicky and bounds off the minute I let him go, then gives me a few thumps. What a little pill!

          Hi, MM,
It sounds like the nail trim was the culprit, but I am rather concerned about that twisted toe. That would account for any changes in behavior or mood, especially if it’s sprained or broken. As for the lungs, if he’s improving I think it’s more a matter of time and keeping him away from further dusty food or places – I think it’s worth watching but for another week. If he is in discomfort, call your vet and ask about the meds and if it can be renewed. I doubt it’s a one time thing, but a phone call will tell you. Actually, calling the pharmacy if you got it there will also tell you. I love pharmacists when it comes to consulting about durations, strengths and drug interactions, especially for human meds.

He will basically not get better about handling I believe unless you do some serious clicker training. Nothing proves the differences in natures and personalities more than Spockie and Samantha. Wow. What a difference all the way down the line. He is who he is. And with his health issues, he probably has reason to avoid being picked up or held, even if he hadn’t minded that much as a baby. C’est lapin.
