I have a rabbit who I am fairly sure has pasteurella/snuffles. We have two other bunnies that he is separated from and has never had any contact with. He is on Baytril and has been for a while and isn’t showing any signs of improvement. My tots and I were patting him earlier today. When I was taking them in another room to wash their hands my youngest daughter quickly slipped her hand in and touched our 8 week old healthy bunny. She was suppose to be rehomed today and now I don’t know what to do. We bought her off of craiglist hoping to stop her from being sold at a fair. I found her a great home but don’t want to get the family in a situation that could cost them 100’s of dollars. I am so torn . . . I’d appreciate your advice thanks.

I doubt that one touch is going to spread an upper respiratory infection. Your rabbit with the UTI have you had a culture and sensitivity test done?

I would not worry about one touch either.

Thanks for your response, it helped me feel much better! Do you know if snuffles is contagious to dogs? I tried to google it but couldn’t find anything about it. I know the family that wants to adopt our bunny has dogs. I appreciate your help!

Well, snuffles is just a catch all term – it’s not an actual infection. The only way you are going to know what infection that your bunny might have is to do a culture. As for pasturella (if that is even what your rabbit has and if you have not done a culture you cannot know for sure as many other bacteria can cause upper respiratory infections), I do believe that dogs can contract pasturella as well as cats.

I did mention doing a culture but my vet thought it was an ineffective thing to do because even healthy buns can have pasturella in their bodies. Maybe I should look for a different vet. Would you worry about rehoming this bun to a home with dogs if she was yours? We’ve had her about two weeks and she has had no signs of infection. She has been healthy and sweet, but she did get that one unwashed pat from my daughter today.

No, I would not worry, if it were me. If indeed your rabbit has pasturella it would take more than a pat from your daughter to infect the other rabbit.

I’m sure the small bunny should be fine, but for your sick rabbit I’d definitely try to get a sensitivity test, so the vet can determine what med will be effective if the baytril is not working.
