        Hello

My rabbit is 9 years old and so suddenly he can not walk. she tries to walk and she turns over. This weakness focuses on the back feet. After the x-ray she did the veterinarian gave us the antibiotic quinolone
What do you believe she has? The vet told us that he has kidney failure but it is questionable. I read on the internet that antibiotic quinolone is toxic for rabbits’ health. is that true?

        Thank you

Quinolone is a class of antibiotics. Do you know which one you have? Ciprofloxacin, for example, falls under that class and is safe for rabbits.

Did the vet consider EC at all? That’s what you normally think of when a rabbit has hind leg weakness.

              Hello

              thank you for the reply!

The vet told me that it is Quinolone antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and she did in her office injectable saline along with deworming without any detail.

She did a poop analysis and she found that my rabbit has parasites in her digestive system. Does that analysis shows if rabbit has ec parasite?

No, that would not show EC. You have to do a blood test, but the test is notorious for false negatives. Sometimes vets just treat based on suspicion.

Just wanted to add that EC also tends to affect the kidneys, so it would be good to ask the vet about it as it could explain both the kidney failure and neurological symptoms. The treatment for EC is usually inexpensive and has few side effects.

As the others have said, ec can explain both the kidney issue and the hind end paralysis/weakness. There might of course still be sth else going on, but its absolutely worth asking your vet about.

Treatment for ec is a dewormer (Panacur, fenbendazole) for 4 weeks  and often an anti inflammatory painkiller (metacam, meloxicam), because ec causes tissue inflammation. Panacur is a slow acting med, so it often takes a couple of weeks before you see improvement.

It’s of course also important to make adjustments of the bun area (fex by  cutting a “doorhole” in the litterbox for easier access), and to make sure she eats.

UPDATE: After I took her to another vet, he found that her left leg has ankylosis. Also the vet palpation a tumor in vagina with his hand
He also told us that a tooth has grown too much and passed through into her gum.
I don’t know if my rabbit is spayed or not. We found her abandoned when she was like around 3 month old
