        Hi!

i recently rescued a bunny and he’s never really used a water bowl or even actually had hay. now when he drinks from his water bowl he absolutely soaks his chin and i’m not sure if it’s normal or if i should be concerned? he also isn’t eating his hay at all and i’m not sure how i can get him to eat it.

My bunny Muffin does the same thing. :/ I don’t know if there’s much you can do about it. You can check for scabs and redness though. Muffin had that and got medication from the vet to clear it up. They said it was probably dermatitis. He still has a bald spot from the wetness.

For hay you can mix in some different types to make it more appetizing. Timothy hay is great and you can mix in some orchard grass or oat hay. Or you can buy mixed hay. Dried herbs sprinkled on top can also help. And put fresh hay in morning and night. Alfalfa hay shouldn’t be fed to adult bunnies (unless pregnant I believe, or just a tiny bit as a once in a while treat).

My bunnies barely ate hay for the first week or two when I brought them home. I think the change of environment can just be stressful enough to make them not eat it. Just make sure the bunny is still eating his pellets and veggies. And try to keep his area calm so he can feel safe. 🙂

How deep is the water bowl? Sometimes providing a more shallow and wide bowl can help.

It can take bunnies some times to realize hay is food if they’ve never had it. What’s the rest of his diet like? If he’s only eating pellets, he won’t have an appetite for hay, but it’s important not to reduce his pellets too drastically because you don’t want to starve him.

It also might be good to confirm he doesn’t have a dental problem that is contributing to both of these things. Buns with tooth issues will often not eat hay. Have you taken him to the vet for a check up?
